Sox dodge big bullet, beat Indians

White Sox fan, Dr. of Geology

I was totally convinced when I saw Gordon Beckham go down last night that he was out for the season with a broken wrist. 95 mph fastball riding in, late in the game from a relief pitcher, off the back (right) wrist dead on. Ow. He was letting his hand go limp on the way down/while sitting there. I'm amazed that the Sox are just calling it a deep bone bruise. Ow. That looked awful.

Anyway, Sox beat up on the Indians last night, but it took a while. Sox got to scoring early, popped 5 in the first 2 innings on Mitch Talbot, who had absolutely owned the Sox in 3 previous outings this season. He gave up more runs in the first 2 innings last night than he did his previous 3 outings against the Sox.

It truly was a hit parade. Every Sox starter had at least 1 hit, and the only guys without multiples were Pierre and Quentin (and Q was removed for Jones in the 9th). Rios tied a career high with 5 hits, including a Hr. The big problem with that was...the Sox still left 15 men on base through 10 innings. They corrected that in the 11th, but still...ugh.

Mark Buehrle was well, Mark Buehrle. Got an early lead, gave you a quality start against the Indians. That's what he does if you give him the early lead, he won't go for the shutout, he'll try to get the game over.

The concern continues to be the bullpen. Sale did his job for the 7th, but Santos struggled some in the 8th and had to give the ball over to Jenks for the last out. Jenks, of course, like all highly paid closers named Bobby Jenks...couldn't pitch more than 1 inning, and gave up 3 to tie in the 9th. Sigh.

Linebrink was quite effective in the 10th for the win, struck out a couple guys and featured a decent curve ball. Gave up nothing in 2 innings.

Sox broke through big time in the 11th...starting with a HR by Brent Lillibridge. The Stealth Elf strikes again. Loaded up after that to make it easy.

ManRoid arrives today. Bats took care of things last night. Might have been easier if we'd gotten a hit or two with RISP.
