The Bad Guys Continue To Win......

This is always one of my favorite times of the calendar year, when all the sports "awards" are handed out.  Everything from the "Sportsman Of The Year" to the "Athlete Of The Decade," someone will disagree with almost every single "award" recipient.
However as we turn the page on another decade of sports, yesterday's "Bad Timing Award" goes to the Associated Press who named Tiger Woods as their "Athlete Of The Decade."
Let the debate rage on!!

Then again if you look at Tiger's record for the last ten years, you could debate that he was the single most dominant athlete in the sport where he participated.  Tiger Woods won 64 tournaments, including 12 major championships.  He won a trophy on every continent where golf is played and won more PGA tournament titles in ten years than only four golfers have in their entire careers.
Tiger Woods is golf, and golf is Tiger Woods.
Woods received 56 of the 142 votes cast since last month by editors at U.S. newspapers that are members of the Associated Press. More than half the ballots were returned after the November 27 car accident outside his Florida home that set off sensational tales of infidelity.
That is my issue with this award.  The fact that this was awarded to a man who lied to not only his family, but also his fan base and his sport.  A man who is rumored to be involved with Dr. Anthony Galea who was recently arrested with HGH and Actovegin (a drug made from calf's blood) in his medical bag at the US/Canada border.  Dr. Galea is the same doctor who treated Woods in 2008 while he recovered from knee surgery.  The FBI suspects Dr. Galea of supplying athletes in the United States with performance enhancing drugs, and today even with the top athletes of sport.....that could be the final straw for Tiger Woods as a PGA Golfer.
So the Associated Press awarded a guy who is involved with scandal, lies, infidelity, drugs, PED's, porn stars, gambling, and who knows what else their highest award that an athlete may be given?
That is more shameful than anything Tiger Woods has done.  To reward a man like Woods by ignoring his entire world crumbling around him over the last month is irresponsible on their part.  Do not even bother with the whole it's what he does on the field of play that matters jargon.  This man built an empire on the image of the perfect family man with the trophy wife and two beautiful children.  He was the clean image of sport in an age where doom and gloom clouded the other heroes of my generation.  He was all that was good and right and children looked up to him as an inspiration.
Now he is nothing more than a scam, a fraud, a lie.
Who would have thought that you could put Tiger Woods in the same sentence as Marion Jones, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Mike Tyson, O.J. Simpson, Michael Vick, and Roger Clemens.  All true competitors in their sport marking great achievement in each.
I grew up watching sports and enjoying them for what they  Can you really say that about today's youth when they watch the same games you and I watch?
"Athlete Of The Decade" Tiger Woods is just the latest man in a long list of disappointments over the past decade.  Sports is less about grown men playing games and more about sex, drugs, and money more now than ever.  It's killing the entertainment value of the games themselves when public perception believes nothing is clean and right about the games they watch.  From NBA refs allegedly fixing games to ballplayers gaining 20 pounds of muscle during the winter.
These are no longer grown men playing games.  Sports are a collection of desperate men doing whatever they can to get the almighty dollar.
Tiger Woods doesn't deserve any kind of reward, because for him what has happened off the golf course will always overshadow anything he has/will ever do on it.

I agree with everything you've written here. I have thought who might be deserving of this award. This hurts because I'm not a "fan" of his, but Peyton Manning seems to have the qualities you would expect of a guy named athlete of the decade. he has excelled at his craft like no one else, and doesnt seem to carry any character baggage. Seems like an upstanding guy, who never misses a game and puts up numbers unmatched by any of his peers.

Until they officially change the definition of “athlete” to include something about an individual’s personal character I don’t have any problem with Tiger Woods winning athlete of the decade. I do have a problem with people who consider golf an athletic sport, because I don’t think it is, but that’s a different debate. You can’t bunch all pro athletes up in the same bunch. The majority of professional athletes remain relatively anonymous, how many of the 54 Bear’s players can you name off the top of your head? I’ll wait…….. Meanwhile I’d bet that most of them are just decent regular guys with the same problems that everyone else has. I’m more disappointed that it has been reported that Tiger paid $60,000 for 3-ways, I could have gotten him that for free.
