Sick of Your IRA and 401(k) Going Up and Down?

Today, the Dow Jones Index closed out #FollowFriday dropping over -323 points.  Again?  For those who follow the stock market and consider their success of failure based on the performance of the 30 companies within this index, may the force be with you.  It seems for most, me included, that the ups and downs of our stock market has gotten old...consumer confidence is way out the window.  Think about this.  If you have lost 30% in your retirement savings, you need a 43% return the following year just to get you back to where you started.  Where are you going to find that, you ask?

One of the greatest misconceptions I help people overcome is how their mortgage can be their friend, not their enemy.   I hear many homeowners and real estate investors say, "Matthew, the bank kills me on the interest I will pay them over 30 years!  I want to get rid of that problem soon!!".  Not so fast.  As a famous radio show personality, Paul Harvey, used to say, "And now for the rest of the story!".   To help me on this crusade of increasing financial education and wealth-building concepts of mortgage planning, is Amir Syed and Arnel Castillo.  Over the next few blog posts, I will share financial concepts that they help real estate owners implement with wiser use of a mortgage.

You just may be what the Urban Dictionary calls "intaxication", meaning the euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.

Of course, there are those that took advantage of the Home Buyer Tax Credit and getting a $8,000 for first time home buyers or $6,500 for existing home owners...

Why You Should Love Your Mortgage and How it Can Help You Build Wealth

user-pic
Matt Sapaula

I am a proud father, financial strategist, TV commentator and financial talk show host of Money Smart Radio

Often times, I get weird stare downs when I share this thought with attendees of our financial workshops.  People are brought up to believe that all debt is bad.  Not necessarily.  There is good debt vs. bad debt.  Mortgages, viewed upon and used properly, can actually be good debt. I will share in one of our more popular videos why it should be looked upon as a wealth-building tool instead.

Part of re-building wealth again in 2010, is taking advantage of the HUGE opportunity owners of IRAs (Individual Retirement Accounts) have this very year.  Also, if you have a 401(k) left behind at a former employer, it behooves you to get your paperwork together and roll it over ASAP to an account that you can better monitor and control.

Simple money smart moves like the one discussed in this post/video will not only help you regain financial control and confidence, but keep your money away from Uncle Sam later in life when you need your money the most.

New Orleans Saints: 3 Quickies to Victory in Personal Finance I Learned from these Champs

Several years ago, Hurricane Katrina left New Orleans in a devastated situation.  New Orleans, LA and surrounding cities in the wake of this natural disaster are still rebuilding their communities, local economy and way of living in the bayou.

But as of last Sunday's Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts, the New Orleans Saints won something even more...world-class confidence.

They brought a huge victory to the people of New Orleans, a story of inspiration and courage, that many of us can follow even if we aren't Saints fans.  What a great American story...to rise up from destruction and become a champion!  Well how does that relate to personal finance?  Simple. Any Wall Street executive, day trader or financial planner can easily tell you that the markets rise and fall on one major factor...consumer confidence.

Should Suze Orman Finally Admit She Was Wrong?

Is the advice of a premier TV financial guru's starting to change and buckle?  Is the mantra of her traditional financial recommendations to millions of viewers starting to take a turn based on how unprecedented this recession has become?

My good friend, Arnel Castillo who is a mortgage professional at American Street Mortgage, shared this video with me and I was shocked. Since I have been involved in the financial planning community for over 10 years, the rumblings of financial planners around me never approved much of what Suze Orman has had to say.  I'm not here to diminish a financial guru's image, but this video from Squawk on the Street may reveal why they feel that way:

Rethink, restructure and redirect...our mantra as we begin our radio show's Money N'Motion Moment with Matt...

Over the past several years, we have been educating consumers on how to effectively manage one of the greatest assets they own...their home equity.
During the real estate boom, it was hard to get anyone's attention. Nevertheless, the deceitfulness of wealth kept many people from hearing words of caution to protect this highly appreciated asset. It caused many to sit on the sidelines, admiring their home equity.

The financial and retirement plan that was at least in the mind of many Americans several years ago, is not working out the way they thought it would.  Traditional financial education, or lack there of, has failed, forcing people to start all over again.

Is Owning an IRA or 401(k) a Ripoff? Changing Economy Revealing Answers

"I don't own an IRA or 401(k)!  Never have, never will!" says financial strategist and NY Times best-selling author Douglas R. Andrew.  "It is the time NOW to convert these traditional retirement plans to better ones," he says.  Which ones?

"Tax-free ones!  Plus, your account values and income tax rates are lower due to our economy.  Why would you want to wait around to do something about your IRA or 401(k) retirement plan, hoping that you will recover what you have lost!", Andrews emphatically states.

You Want to Be Rich? You Might Not Have a Choice

Matt Sapaula

I am a proud father, financial strategist, TV commentator and financial talk show host of Money Smart Radio

A few years ago, Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki wrote a profound book titled, "Why We Want Your to be Rich".  This was eye-opening work which shares shocking facts about the American economy that most Americans don't realize.

Whether your are rich or poor...the fact is the American middle class is disappearing...quickly.  It is no secret that we have losing manufacturing and jobs to countries overseas by the millions. Middle-class families like the one I was raised in are having a tougher time each year.  Staying ahead of the economic shifts which affect retirement planning, the ability to send our kid's to college, keeping gainfully employed and staying on a path aimed towards financial security is tougher and tougher when you don't put time on our side. (Yes, that means STOP procrastinating!)

A recent post last week stated that the Top 1 Percent of Americans Control 42 Percent of Financial Wealth in the U.S...

Ok, let's just make sure we ALL have the proper definition of what a "baller" is.  I know the first time I heard that term was back in the day during summertime pick-up games and watchin' Boyz in the Hood at the movies.

Urban Dictionary defines "Baller" as a thug that has "made it" to the big time. Originally referred to ball players that made it out of the streets to make millions as a pro ball player, the term is now used to describe any thug that is living large.

3 Tips to Make Your New Year's Resolution a Reality

While taking my kids to the gym this morning, I was pleasantly reminded that it is the first weekend of the New Year, New Decade.  Yup, the gym was PACKED!  Many resolutions began to take a reality and I was glad people were taking ACTION!  In the grand scheme of things, how we handle one aspect of our lives has a "trickle-down" affect into other areas too.  For example, how we handle our personal lives has bearing into our professional decisions.  How we take care of our spiritual lives can manifest into our mental, physical or even financial being.

I was encouraged this morning by such a packed gym to write down some thoughts that can help encourage a continued journey to making a resolution into reality. (Yes, this does include how you can better handle your personal finances too!)

Go Green Appliance Rebate Program Hopes to Stimulate Economy in New Year

I am a proud father, financial strategist, TV commentator and financial talk show host of Money Smart Radio

I told my friend Steve Green of Go Green Management that there was a special government appliance rebate program coming...in his honor.  Naaah! But since there is SOME truth to this, I thought I'd at least mention this attempt to stimulate our economy once again, through the stimulus plan known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

With the new year, Illinois residential consumers may qualify for a new rebate program if they buy energy efficient appliances. This is a national program but each state has it's own rules and ways to administer the appliance rebate program.  There has been some buzz about this on our Facebook page, so I just had to drop some thoughts.

How You Can Still Be a Millionaire by 30, er 40, okay 60!

user-pic
Matt Sapaula

It seems that the path to financial independence has taken a detour and set back many plans for several more years. One has to ask themselves, can I still be a millionaire by 30, 40 or even 50? Or even at all?

How many people do you know who have aired their deep concern with losing money in their 401(k) retirement plans or equity value of their real estate properties?

Is there a solution to all the financial and economic problems we are facing? How is the "lost generation" supposed to graduate from college and follow the dreams from four to five years ago that was so enticing before entering college?

How are young professionals who have begun to build upon their experience and accomplishments keep continuing to move forward? They face big speed bumps staring into a tough economy which includes massive layoffs, high interest credit card debt, large student loans to payback, snail-paced hiring decisions and job uncertainty?

With some much financial pressure squeezing us from so many different directions, it is common to "freeze up".  It's as if every move we make ends up in disaster and we feel helpless to do anything about it.

Before leaving the United States Marine Corps after eight years of active duty, I found myself broke and penniless.  How? Because of a lack of personal financial knowledge, I did not know all my options when I came to financial difficulty.  I just went through a divorce.  My credit cards where all charged up.  I was working to pay everybody else and had nothing left for me.

I knew the tactics and strategies of U.S. Marine Corps combat and weaponry, but could not fight off creditors to save my life.

All this hype about the greatest deals happening during Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been exciting. Naturally.  Who doesn't like a good deal?  I remember as a kid, my mom would take me out shopping to get presents for friends and family.  She'd ask, "Do you like that for Mark? Or Sharon?  Or Nikki?  Or Chuck?"  I'd say, "Ya Ma!  But can I get one too?"  I was a selfish little kid, eh?

As an adult, I'd go out shopping for the people on my list just to find the right suit/tie, Under Armor gear or CDs/DVDs for who? ME!
