Free World Class Jazz

The Chicago Jazz Festival is Chicago's oldest lakefront music fest, but it's still a month away. You don't have to wait that long for some fantastic (and free) jazz; you can get your fix now with "Made In Chicago: World Class Jazz".
This weekly series of free concerts in Millennium Park's Pritzker Pavilion highlights Chicago's jazz greats and each one opens with musicians from an area high school.

This week it's all about the alto sax with Rudresh Mahanthappa and Bunky Green. Following weeks honor Miles Davis, Fred Anderson, Willie Pickens, and more, and the series culminates with the Benny Goodman Centennial Celebration. (As a former clarinetist I'm personally partial to that one!)

If you're unfamiliar, or would like to become reacquainted with, any of these artists, the Made In Chicago website has sample recordings for each concert.

Schedule:

Aug 6, Rudresh Mahanthappa's Chicago Legacy Ensemble featuring Bunky Green
Aug 13, Sketches of Brazil: Robert Irving III's Orchestral Homage to Miles and Gil Evans
Aug 20, Celebrating a Jazz Hero: Fred Anderson's 80th Birthday
Aug 27, Chicago Piano Showcase: Willie Pickens and Ron Perrillo
Sept 3, Benny Goodman Centennial Celebration
