There's something about candy that makes me think of childhood. It's ironic, because in my childhood, candy was, for the most part, for special occasions: Halloween, Easter, Christmas stockings.

There was a modern penny candy store in one of the local malls in my hometown that closed when I was in middle school; bin after bin of every type of confectionery treat you could possibly imagine.

You know what I really like? I mean really, really like? Maybe even draw-its-name-in-my-notebook like, call-it-by-a-code-name like? Yes, more-than-friends-like like?

Chocolate. I like my chocolate pure, unadulterated. Sure, I'll relent and admit that there is something to be said for raspberry chocolate truffles or walnuts in brownies,. I've even dabbled in mint chocolate martinis and that's about as adulterated as chocolate can get.

Love to bake? Love to eat? Then, you might want to read on. Earlier this year, my friend Gaby Dalkin contacted me about helping plan the Chicago leg of the first annual National Food Bloggers Bake Sale, part of the Great American Bake Sale.

Who: Some of Chicago's finest food blogs and bakeries will be there, including Kudos Kookies & Foiled Cupcakes.

What: Remember your childhood bake sales? This one will be even better! Food bloggers and baking aficionados are teaming up to give readers the opportunity to sample some of their favorite baked goods and treats. Proceeds from the sale benefit Share Our Strength.

When: Saturday, April 17 from 12pm - 3pm (CST)

Where: Smash Cake Bakery, 2961 N. Lincoln Ave. Chicago IL 60657 (at Wellington) Get a sneak peek at its BRAND NEW location!

Why: Food bloggers from across the country will unite to support the Share Our Strength's efforts to end childhood hunger in America by holding bake sales in their states. Proceeds from the sale will support the 17 million children (almost one in four) who face hunger in America. More information on SOS can be found at www.strength.org.

I'm leading up efforts here in Chicago and if you are interested in baking, volunteering your time on site at the event or helping to promote the event to your friends, readers, fans or followers, please send me an email at maris.callahan@gmail.com.

(This is a cross post from In Good Taste. I rarely duplicate content but this is an important event for a great cause and I want to spread the word wherever possible!

Favorite Saturday Mornings, Twisted Sister Bakery

I have a vision of a perfect Saturday morning, if such a thing even exists. While Sunday mornings are for cozy at-home breakfasts, in bed or around the kitchen table, Saturday mornings are on-the-go.

My perfect Saturday morning is rooted in reality despite the fact that this sequence of events has never actually happened, but I suppose that's what makes it unattainably ideal. On my perfect Saturday morning I would wake up, feeling refreshed from a good night's sleep after a long week. I'd don running tights (which I don't own) that make my toned legs look great (toned legs?) and go for a long run. Not just any run though; the kind of run for which you can carb-load the night before and ice your muscles afterward (that I've never done).

After my long run, I'd pop by a local coffee shop, such as Twisted Sister Bakery, feeling energized and flushed from my workout, to refuel with a great cup of coffee and a healthy, yet delicious breakfast. Now, we're talking a bit more realistically.

A Love Letter: Ciao Bella Single Serving Gelato

Dear Ciao Bella,

I want to start by telling you that It isn't easy to sweep me off my feet. You see, I'm somewhat of a tough critic. I'm jaded beyond my years and though I'm not necessarily quick to pass judgment, once I do, I can be pretty set in my ways.

Anyone who reads my first blog probably knows that I love chocolate. I prefer a chocolate dessert to any of the citrus, spice or fruit variety. I am not a huge fan of marrying chocolate with anything else: chocolate + strawberry, chocolate + citrus and chocolate + well, anything (especially peanut butter. My personal road to hell will likely be paved with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups).

Anyway, I digress.

I'm not going to come right out and say that I chose to live in my current apartment because it's three blocks away from a gelato shop, but I'm also not going to lie and say that it wasn't a selling point.

Last week, I was treated to a gelato tasting with Ani Poddar, local entrepreneur and franchise owner of Paciugo Gelato in Chicago's Lakeview East. We talked gelatoaffogato, and a little bit about the business of gelato.

"I was out with my wife and some friends for dinner and we stopped by a gelato shop called Paciugo," he said. "They say that there are some moments that immediately change the trajectory of your life. Mine was when i tasted the black pepper and olive oil (pepenero) flavor. I couldn't believe that anything flavored with olive oil could taste so sweet and creamy."

In some of my previous posts on this blog and my personal recipe blog I've talked a lot lately about healthy eating and exercise. What I haven't mentioned as explicitly is that part of the reason I like to eat  healthy and exercise is so that I can afford myself the occasional indulgence.

When I eat dessert, I want to really eat dessert. I'm not interested in low-fat cookies or sugar-free ice cream. When I indugle, I like to go for one-of-a-kind sweets..
