Newdow, Sherman to sue to block IGWT at Capitol Visitor Center

America's top two atheists, Mike Newdow and I, will be filing suit, shortly, to stop the Architect of the Capitol in Washington, D.C., from desecrating the Capitol Visitor Center by engraving "In god we trust" in the brand new facility.

At issue is the constitutionality of spending tax dollars to advance religion, which this expenditure would do and which clearly is prohibited by the First Amendment.

According to Chicago Tribune story House orders 'In God We Trust' engraved in new visitor center,

the United States House of Representatives voted 410 to 8 on Thursday to direct the Architect of the Capitol to engrave "In god we trust" and the equally anti-atheist Pledge of Allegiance into the new visitor center.  The Bill is House Congressional Resolution # 131.

When we vote to elect the members of Congress, we are voting to authorize them to spend our money for legitimate, secular, public purposes.  We authorize them to tax us to accomplish that specific purpose only.

Raising our taxes to obtain money to promote or endorse god-belief is not a legitimate, secular, public purpose.  We will not allow Congress to increase our taxes to pay for promoting and endorsing mono-theism.

The claim by certain members of Congress that this expenditure is suppossedly to "honor the country's religious background" clearly is a sham purpose to try to get away with taxing atheists to promote religion.  If members of Congress want to promote religion, let them do it like those nice people from the Knights of Columbus did by spending their own money and promoting religion on their own, private property.

Congress is not going to get away with it.  Mike Newdow and I are going to stop them.  Stay tuned.

"America's top two atheists?" That's a very odd claim. I know who Michael Newdow is but even after having gone to your website I don't have the foggiest notion of who you are. How about Dan Barker? Annie Laurie Gaylor? PZ Myers? Hemant Mehta? Sam Harris? Christopher Hitchens? (Yes, he is American) Ed Buckner? You're kidding, right?

And your website says that your name is "Anonymous." You're kidding, right?

I've been doing this far too long to take seriously or to respond to criticism from anonymous sources. In fact, the best proof possible that a critic has no credibility and that, in fact, the opposite is true, is when the critic hides his identity.

Nice try, but it didn't work.

rob, don't take yourself too seriously. i do have to agree with the above commenter that your "top two atheists" claim was a bit unusual. hitchens would be #1 for me. i guess you can still be #1 in illinois.

that said, i think you are doing great work here. i'm a new follower to the blog and am looking forward to hearing more inside stories and supporting your efforts. it's sickening to see how much of our money is wasted on religious initiatives. as if our local governments aren't corrupt enough.
