Free Gyros Day Today! And More Freebies Throughout the Year

This post went out as this week's Deals and Steals newsletter. Subscribe here.

Free Gyros Day! Last year, many Chicagoans were taken by surprise when Kronos offered a day of free gyros, but this year, we are ready. Let's hope the restaurants are ready too. (I'm heading to Dino's in Oak Park with two of my little Frugalistas in 90 minutes.)

WHAT: One free gyros to any customer with a coupon at any of 54 participating Chicagoland locations.

WHEN: Today! Tuesday, August 31, all day.

HOW: Print out a coupon here, then check this Frugalista post for a list of locations.

There is no purchase required, but Kronos will put out collection boxes for the Fisher House Foundation, which helps military families.

Which reminds me to add a few other annual free days in the Chicago area to my calendar:

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day, held between late March and early May. This has been going on for more than 30 years now!

Haagen-Dazs Free Flavor Day is usually in mid-May

Free Cheesecake at Eli's for National Cheesecake Day, July 29 or 30

Eli's Cheesecake Festival, Sept. 25 (free slice when you donate a non-perishable food item, plus free entertainment and cheesecake samples)

National Donut Day, 1st Friday in June. Dunkin' Donuts gives a free doughnut with beverage purchase, while Krispy Kreme didn't require a purchase last year.

Tax Day, April 15, usually hosts plenty of freebies, including free coffee at Starbucks. File early so you have more time to collect freebies!

Your birthday, various. Sign up for free meals and drinks at practically any business with a Web site, then see how many you can enjoy in just 24 hours.

Reader suggestions. After this newsletter went out, readers sent me these freebies:

Richard said: "Flat Top Grill usually gives you a free lunch/dinner stir fry on your birthday. They also give you a free meal on the anniversary you join their mailing list."

Georgene said: "Glenwood Oaks Restaurant in Glenwood, IL gives you your age percentage off of your dinner selection on your birthday with proof of age (driver's license). E.G. we took our 91 year old neighbor on his birthday and payed 9% of the cost of his dinner entree.
Check it out. (their food is YUMMY)"
