Fresh Ink reader, Brad, contacted me in hopes of getting some suggestions for great artists who can do a custom "Sailor Jerry-ish rockabilly style pin up girl sleeve". I gave him some recommendations of my own -

A White Sox Fan Memorializes Her Uncle in Tattoos

Fresh Ink reader, Ariel, hails from Cicero and has always grown up a White Sox fan. To show her appreciation for her team, she got their logo placed on her back.

Now, I'm a Cubs fan but the Sox logo is pretty cute.  Ariel also shared a really beautiful tattoo she got to memorialize her uncle, who recently passed away. I'm sure my buddy Joe, who writes another great ChicagoNow blog, Arresting Tales, would agree this is a really nice way to remember a police officer.

Rich Gorsky, from Forever Haunted Tattoo, did both of these pieces and Ariel had nothing but good things to say about him. From what I can see, it looks like he did a great job.

Tertle Gets a Half-Breed Tattoo

Lawrence from Pilsen is fondly called "Tertle" by some of his friends. Of course, I had to ask how this nickname came to be. Apparently my new friend used to be a pretty big stoner (no judgments here) and was snowboarding very slowly after partaking in some herbal refreshments. His brother seized the opportunity and started calling him a stoned turtle - which then turned into Tertle.  He, and his half-human half-turtle spine tattoo will forever be Lertle to me.

He had this design hand drawn by tattoo artist Whitney Shake at Point Blank in South Bend, Indiana.

Lawrence also sent over a few pics of his other ink for me to share as well:

Stacey Shows Her Love for Chicago

Stacey contacted me a while back after reading about my affinity for Chicago-inspired tattoos. I love the combination she ended up using with her tat, which was done at Insight Studios. Unfortunately, she says, her favorite artist, Rich Marafioti, doesn't work there anymore and he's responsible for the most of the work she's had done. Don't you hate when that happens? She's reppin' Evergreen Park and as you can see below, has a lot of love for Chicago.

Tattoo Tribute to The 80's

Fresh Ink reader, Shay, is a girl after my own heart. She currently resides in Athens, Georgia where she's going to school (I'll throw out the "Go Dawgs!" for you just cuz I like your style) but she's reppin'  Englewood.

She wrote, "I'm a huge 80's junkie (nerd hybrid) eventhough I was born in '89. I got the 80s baby tattoo last Thanksgiving and the tape in January. Of course my family was very pissed (oh well!). Thinking about getting an Atari (symbol) or Rubiks Cube one day soon!"

To this I say, hell to the yes and please send in pics when they're done! I'd love to get a "Totally 80's" gallery up.

One of the last tattoos I got is actually a cassette tape as well, so I think this is pretty bitchin'.

In honor of the 80's and all of its radness, I bring you this video (hat tip to the most badass woman ever, Kathleen Hannah for introducing me to this genius). This is the most amazing thing I have watched in a long time and is about ten times better than the dancing that took place at my bat mitzvah.

Donnie's Got Chicago Love and Sugar Skulls

I am just about the biggest lover of Chicago-inspired tattoos that there is. When I was out having too many drinks at the Paramount last week (try their beet salad), I met Donnie, whose Chicago flag tattoo was poking out of his shirt.

He said he got the tat about two years ago because he loves the city and is proud to be here. Not only has he lived here his entire life but his family has been living here since before the Chicago fire happened! That is a long ass time. Donnie says he wanted to keep it simple, which is why he didn't get the white filled in.

Chicago Flag

His favorite piece he got almost a year ago.

"For a long time I really liked Day of the Dead artwork and the meanings behind them.  Then a good friend of mine passed away last October.  So, I decided it was time to get that sugar skull.  I wasn't exactly sure of the design, so I googled the shit out of 'sugar skull', 'day of the dead,' etc....I ended up finding a pic of what I liked.  The photo was of a skull similar to mine burned on the top of an old wooden chest.  I took that photo to my friend Rich Marafioti at Insight Studios and he completely redrew it.  He then asked me what colors I wanted to be.  I had seen Rich's stuff and he also did my flag, so knew he was good with color, so I let him pick them out....I trusted him.  It turned out better than I thought.  Rich does great work and he's now at Family Tattoo."

Sugar Skull

Rawk. Speaking of rock, I apparently missed a man pulling his pants down and almost peeing on the floor of the place. At least I got out of there with a fresh ink story.

A Friend A Memory A Squirrel Tattoo

Welcome back from a glorious weekend of perfect Chicago weather. Seriously, the last two days were better than the entire summer. It was a really exciting weekend for many reasons, the biggest of which was that my girlfriend got her very first tattoo - which she designed herself. Not allowing her to have all the fun, I got a small one too, cuz that's how I roll.

Last Thursday after our ChicagoNow blogger meetup, I headed over to Big Chicks for a tasty black bean burger and (of course) more whiskey. There were a lot of tattoos out for the evening but only a few that truly caught my attention like Adrea's:

Squirrel

I mean, how many people do you know who have a squirrel tattoo? I felt a little like a creep but I had to ask about it.

Andrea's friend (whose initials are shown) had an affinity for squirrels. Unfortunately, this friend passed away - so in his memory, she got the squirrel on her arm.

Her friend Charly, from Ageless Arts Tattoos in Pilsen, did the work. I think it's a great tribute to a friend and a totally unique piece of ink.

Harry Potter Dark Mark Tattoo

Remember the party time that was Chris? Well he's got a brother who is also cute and tatted. The brothers, who are also Harry Potter fans, got matching Dark Mark tattoos.

Dark Mark

The brothers grew up with stoner parents who were really into The Lord of The Rings and see Harry Potter as the LOTR for this generation.

The first tat he got was at 21 and was a Japanese symbol for "spirit". The next one he got on a drunken trip to Kentucky with some buddies which means "13" "...or 'golden showers'" he says. (For a great site that shows a bunch of misinterpreted/mis-tatted Asian symbols, hit up Hanzi Smatter, which is "dedicated to the misuse of Chinese characters in Western culture").

Like his brother, he gets a lot of his stuff done by Tiny at  Metamorph but he really goes all over. He's a kick-ass artist (and actually drew up the design on Chris's chest) so he makes sure to look at what else the artists have done. If he can draw better than they can - he'll go elsewhere.

Check out some more Harry Potter tats after the jump.

Fresh Ink reader Sal Alcantar has got a lot of love for Chicago. He wrote in and shared an impressive step-by-step photo gallery of his tattoo as it was getting done. Here's what he had to say:

I'm sending you a pic of my Chicago Tribute Tattoo, it's sort of paying homage to the city where I was born and raised. The artist is a very good friend of mine. His name is Sean Baltzell of Iron Age Tattoos in St. Louis, MO.

It's a great tribute to a great city.

CJ - South Side Strength, Honor And Cycling

Music + whiskey + tattoos= me

During a recent shopping trip to H&M, I was rung out by a a cute young guy named CJ whose right arm caught my eye. I asked if he would mind speaking to me about his body art and thankfully he got in touch with me the next day so we could set up a time to meet.

His first tattoo came about a month after turning 18 and is a gear from a bicycle. At the time, he said, he would bike everywhere, it was a big part of his life. He felt that it was small enough to not be intrusive but was a reminder that little things have meaning among the bigger picture.
