Big Scare In Iowa: What's Really Going On With Bryan Bulaga?

Tim Cary

According to the Des Moines Register, an Iowa radio station has described Hawkeye offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga as questionable for Saturday's rivalry game against Iowa State.

Not much more is known about the reason for Bulaga's possible absence, but the mystery has led to a great deal of Internet speculation about a serious injury or even illness.

Bulaga is arguably the most talented player on the Iowa roster, and FBT named him one of the "Big Ten's Best 11" only a few weeks ago.

If Bulaga will in fact miss Saturday's game, hopefully it's nothing major and he can return to the field soon.  Always hard to make sense of what's just Internet rumors and what might be real, but the story of a health issue (some have said with Bulaga's heart) seems to be picking up steam.  Obviously the rumblings of something season- or career-ending are cause for great concern, but at this point, we just wait for concrete news out of Iowa City.

CFB: Iowa vs Illinois NOV 1

UPDATED: Postscript re: Twitter...   Some of the Twitter-rumors have been assigned to us as a source, again we want to clarify that we didn't break this story and have no first-hand knowledge of what is or isn't going on.  We want to avoid any speculation until further details (and confirmed facts) are known.  However, the FBT Twitter account did RE-TWEET (quote and mention) this post, as we reacted with surprise to a possibility that could have a great deal of impact on Iowa's season.  We haven't confirmed the rumor, and we don't know at this point if it has a basis in truth or not.  Until we do, we've deleted the "re-tweet" so as to not add to the confusion.

Too late Tim. If we lose Saturday, it is ALL your fault. :)

Hopefully Iowa won't have to block two straight field goals to win this week! Obviously we hope the rumors of something more serious aren't true...still waiting for an official statement from the university...

Hopefully Reiff can step up this week. Bulaga has an over active thyroid. He is just being safe and sitting out this week. "SHOULD" be ready to go vs Arizona. Iowa need's some new people to step up so their D isn't on the field for 40 mintues. GO Hawks! Get well soon Bryan!

Thanks for the comment...I've heard the thyroid thing in a couple different places on the Internet, which if true, is much better than anything involving the heart. Agree that controlling time of possession will be important; Iowa needs to establish a solid running game Saturday.
