The USA Today coaches' poll came out this morning, and of the many Big Ten schools who hope to have special football seasons in 2009, only three cracked the Top 25.
Ohio State and Penn State, last year's league co-champions, are both in the Top Ten at No. 6 and No. 8, respectively, while Iowa is the conference's only other representative at No. 21.
USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll Released: Three Big Ten Schools Ranked
Among other schools receiving votes, Michigan State ranks second with
136 total points, while Illinois has 38, Wisconsin 6, Northwestern 5,
Michigan 1, and Minnesota 1. The only Big Ten schools to not receive
any coaches' votes are Indiana and Purdue.
Big Ten coaches voting in this year's poll include Minnesota's Tim Brewster, Michigan State's Mark Dantonio, Indiana's Bill Lynch, Michigan's Rich Rodriguez, Ohio State's Jim Tressel, and Ron Zook of Illinois.
A quick look at the overall rankings shows Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma 1-2-3 with their returning Heisman-finalist quarterbacks. Ohio State's first true non-conference test, Southern Cal, checks in at No. 4.
There also seems to be a recognition and respect for what some of the BCS-busters have accomplished this decade: 16-17-18 are Boise State, TCU, and Utah, respectively.
The complete poll is available on the USA Today website here.
