From the "News That Just Doesn't Seem Fair" department...

ESPN's Joe Schad is reporting today that Illinois sophomore cornerback Miami Thomas will miss the 2009 season due to an ACL injury.
As IlliniHQ.com wrote this week, Thomas suffered the injury to his left knee during Tuesday's practice.  The sad part is that Thomas, a Chicago native who played in 12 of 13 games for Illinois in 2007, missed almost all of last season due to an ACL tear in his right knee.

Injuries (especially during practice) are never good news for any team, but for an offensively loaded club with questions on the defensive side of the ball, losing a promising cornerback like Thomas is especially difficult.

In other news around the Big Ten...

Talk about being the "center" of attention!   The watch list for the Rimington Trophy, honoring the nation's top center, has been released.  Scott Chipman, as always, has the rundown of the five Big Ten players who appear on the list.

Wildcats + Watermelon = ??  The Big Ten Network is broadcasting today from Northwestern's practice (10 pm ET), and it appears from the network's Twitter feed that a watermelon eating contest is among the festivities.  Is Coach Pat Fitzgerald trying to plant some "seeds" for a great season?

More on Moeller.  Ken Gordon of the Columbus Dispatch has uncovered a great deal of information on the attack that injured Buckeye linebacker Tyler Moeller, including the other man's side of the story.  You can read the whole article from Gordon here
