Dancing Naked Ladies (and Boys) for Christmas

delightminiTwo new offbeat Chicago Christmas shows prove the point that the holidays aren't just for the kiddies. If mashups of classic Christmas specials, sexy burlesque, and drag-queen screwball comedy sound like a fun December evening, leave the small ones at home and consider heading to one of these edgy, adult-oriented seasonal spectaculars...

Girlie-Q's Delight Before Christmas
The Windy City's original LGBT burlesque troupe, Girlie-Q, is presenting its first-ever holiday show, Delight Before Christmas, a full-length, mainstage production incorporating a wide variety of classic burlesque, modern dance, variety acts, and performance art to tell the story of a hopeless Fox News intern who posts a sad holiday message on Craigslist, only to be led on magical quest by the Fairy Craigster to find the true meaning of the season. Along the journey, they encounter a gender-bending group of performers who each express the meaning of Christmas in their own unique and titillating ways.

The campy, comic journey stars noted Chicago performers Faustina von Feist, Honey La Fleur, Paul "Pusie" Backer, Adam "Elena" Rose, Kelly "Special K" Kiorpes, Brad "Jugglemaster" French, Kyle Greer, Brad Brubaker, the "Emoclown," the Stage Door Johnnies, and the Amazing, Bendable, Poseable Dolls of Doom, and will feature nightly guest acts from the local and national burlesque and queer performance scenes.features nightly guest stars from the local and national burlesque and performance-art scenes.

"Commercialism runs rampant during the holiday season--and homophobia is ever-present," said Girlie-Q founder and artistic director, JT Newman (profiled in Chicagosphere's debut post in May 2009 and a leading local blogger on the burlesque arts.) "We're here to help Chicago let go of the status quo, loosen up, and enjoy a fun holiday romp that leaves traditional roles behind."

The show runs Thursdays-through-Saturdays at Theatre Building Chicago in Lakeview through December 19th. For full details and to purchase tickets see the Girlie-Q or Theatre Building Chicago websites. (Disclosure: JT Newman is a public-relations client of mine.)

Midtangent Production's Snow White and the Drag Queen Who Stole X-Mas
The sequel to this summer's popular Snow White and the Seven Drag Queens, this new musical from Chicago's Midtangent Productions and writer-director Tony Lewis stars longtime Kit Kat Lounge drag performer Madame X as the Queen Grinch who's kidnapped the fabulous Miss White, prompting the Drag Queens--with Prince Charming in tow--to launch a mission to rescue her.

Much like the Girlie-Q show, this new show reworks well-known classic holiday tunes with a queer sensibility. Chicago Now What's a Boy to Do scribe Michael Lehet loved the original Snow White show back in July--see his video review of that show here.

Snow White and the Drag Queen Who Stole X-Mas takes over Boystown bar Hydrate Fridays and Saturdays through December 12th. For more on the show, listen to Madame X's recent interview on popular LGBT podcast Feast of Fun, or browse this recent writeup on the show in the Chicago Stage Review. Purchase tickets via
