Barista killed in tragic cycling accident
BY PJ RANDHAWA
Liza Whitacre, a 20-year-old barista and Loyola University student, was killed Wednesday in a tragic cycling accident on Chicago's north side. Whitacre was cycling with a roommate on Damen Avenue, when she attempted to pass between a truck and a CTA bus.
Whitacre apparently slipped off her bike and fell underneath the passing truck, according to police.
The truck driver was not aware that Whitacre had fallen underneath and drove on. Whitacre was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Officer John Mirabelli, a police spokesman, has confirmed that no citations have been issued in the accident.
Whitacre was a popular barista at Chicago's Metropolis Coffee House. In a statement issued by the cafe shortly after the incident, she is remembered lovingly. "She radiated, she beamed, she rubbed off that pixie glow on everyone that she came across."
Whitacre described her favorite actitives as "...biking to a café, drinking coffee while talking to a friend in french and knitting..." on her Twitter page.
Tweeters from all around Chicago and patrons of the trendy cafe are grieving the loss of this radiant young woman.
