Ruger the German Shepherd needs a home

One of the best things about having a blog is being able to publicize good causes.  I've done it in the past for the Children's Advocacy Center, CPD Officer Densey Cole and St. Baldrick's Foundation.  Today I want to tell you about a dog who needs a home, and about the organization that's trying to find one for him.

Meet Ruger:

Ruger needs a home

Last weekend my bride and I were on our way to a party on the northwest side.  When we arrived, we saw a car pulled off the street at a strange angle, and a crowd of about 15 people standing around.  I thought there had been an accident.   What drew the crowd was this dog running in and out of traffic, worked up and scared.  No one seemed to know what to do, and watching the near-misses between this dog and passing cars was painful.  Me and another guy were able to lure the dog close enough to grab him in a bear hug and control him, and that seemed to calm him down.

A nice woman showed up with a bowl of water and a rope to loop around the dog's neck--he had no collar or tags.  Calls to 311 for animal control were useless.  The only thing I could think of to do was bring the dog back to my department, kennel him there and talk to our animal warden.  About halfway there I questioned the wisdom of putting a strange, large dog in the backseat of my car, but he was an excellent passenger and I made it to the station without getting bitten in the head.

Within 2 days he'd been checked out by the vet and placed with German Shepherd Rescue, Inc.  They named him Ruger (an excellent bad-ass name for a German Shepherd--I used to own a Ruger handgun) and are now working on finding a home for him.

Unfortunately my household is already at our 3-dog limit or I would've taken him myself.  If you want to learn more about Ruger you can look at his Petfinder page here.  If you're interested in adopting a German Shepherd, or want to help out a good organization, you can visit German Shepherd Rescue, Inc. to learn more.

What a great dog. Two cats rule the roost but I'm passing it on.

Thanks Joe and Happy 3 day weekend.
