One sentence horror stories are popular this Halloween season, so here’s one for you: Tweens carving pumpkins with knives.
While I was kidding, it turns out that injuries incurred during pumpkin carving happen. According to the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, hospitals see four to five times more hand injuries than normal each October due to pumpkin carving accidents. It’s more than just kids who need to stay safe.
Keep kids and the whole family safe and give them a fun creative outlet by letting them decorate pumpkins. These are very simple and can take as much or as little time as you like. Here are their creations.
Think of buying some pie pumpkins and having a pumpkin party, or make it BYOP (Bring Your Own Pumpkin) and just provide supplies. My tween is in quite the crafty phase and these minimal mess, knife-free pumpkin decorating ideas mean that she and her best friend who created them with her got their craft fix.
Some of these are not exactly what I envisioned. I admit that I was a little disappointed when they didn’t turn out to be the masterpieces I had in my head. But then I realized that I had it all wrong.
Holidays seem to have morphed from an opportunity to create with kids, and enjoy the process, not create something that looks like it belongs in a magazine spread. Most of all, it should be a chance for kids to express themselves and have fun.
It didn’t have to be what I pictured. It had to be what they pictured, and it was.
Even better, the tweens weren’t in front of a screen. They were talking and giggling while they decorated with inexpensive materials. They seemed pleased with themselves at the end of the crafting session. No stain removal was required, and everyone had their fingers attached.
Happy pumpkin decorating and let us know what your favorite way to pretty up a pumpkin is!
