Exploring the Disney World Parks with Tweens and Older Kids

Please welcome guest poster Becca Ludlum, author of Our Crazy Boys, where she shares her experiences as a mom to two tween boys. She’s sharing her experience with her boys at Disney World in Orlando and giving us some great tips for fun at the Mouse House with older kids. Thanks so much for being part of Tween Travel Week, Becca!

Seriously fun times await you at Disney World if you have older kids. We went when our son Michael was 11 years old and our son Jack was 7 years old. Sure, we didn’t experience the character meals, The Pirate’s League, and Dumbo, like many families with small children do – but we did get to be night owls and stay for extra magic hours, conquer the kitchen sink, and go on a gaming binge at Disney Quest.

The Cast Members are sensitive to older kids, we found, and were excited to point out attractions for tweens and teens. Rather than hugging the older kids, most characters will hold their hand out for a High 5. My shy 11 year-old was left giggling when he asked a Cast Member for directions to a restroom and wasn’t given them until he have them a “good” knuckle bump.
