What is the most effective way to preserve marriage?  How can Catholics preserve the sacrament of holy matrimony?

My husband and I often talk about the disintegration of marriage.  My husband feels that the baby boomers (our generation) have destroyed marriage.  We were the ones who brought about free love, living together and the divorce epidemic.  Divorce has become common place and the “starter marriage” is part of our vernacular.

What went wrong?  We may be losing our examples of what a good marriage is.  Fewer people stay married even after being together 25 or 30 years.  They don’t see a point in staying together even if they are Catholic.

If you look around, you probably know a lot of divorced people among your family and friends.  My father was married to someone else before my mother.  He was always ashamed of that despite the fact that it was not his fault. What he experienced is probably not uncommon.  When you have a spouse who doesn’t want to stay married to you, there’s not a whole lot you can do about it.

I remind my husband of our “prenup” (another factor that he feels has destroyed marriage).  When we became engaged, we talked about divorce.  He told me he would never give me one.  If our marriage fell apart, we would just separate.  I agreed to it (and still do).  If something happens to us (even after 33 years) you will find me in the convent.

What is the most effective way to preserve marriage?  People who are married have to step up and show the world what marriage is.  We have to reflect God’s love, Christ’s love, and the power of the Holy Spirit in our marriages.  We have to strive for sainthood like Louis and Zélie Martin.

Please pray for all those in holy matrimony.
