Outside Magic

The warmer weather has finally arrived and getting outside will be my priority.  I’m looking forward to a summer of long walks, long bike rides and anything else that entails breathing fresh air.  I can’t wait for our annual trip to Ravinia, neighborhood summerfests and all that summer brings.

I started walking on a regular basis a few years ago and then I purchased a bike.  Both give me a spiritual energy when I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed.

One morning, I received my email from Heather King.  This quote was included and I immediately put the book from where it came in on my wish list.  This is what I want my summer to be:  Outside magic.

“Get out now. Not just outside, but beyond the trap of the programmed electronic age so gently closing around so many people at the end of our century. Go outside, move deliberately, then relax, slow down, look around. Do not jog. Do not run…

Abandon, even momentarily, the sleek modern technology that consumes so much time and money now, and seek out the resting place of a technology almost forgotten. Go outside and walk a bit, long enough to forget programming, long enough to take in and record new surroundings…

Outside lies programmed awareness that at times becomes directed serendipity. Outside lies magic.” – John R. Stilgoe (from his book: Outside Lies Magic: Regaining History and Awareness in Everyday Places)

Outside Magic.  It’s what summer is all about!
