How is your Lent going?

How is your Lent going?  I know it’s only a week in, but I’m asking for a friend.

Not really.  I’m asking for me because mine got off to a rocky start and I’m hoping I’m not the only one.

On the night before Ash Wednesday, I packed my lunch and my daughter’s.  As I sat at work enjoying my lovely salad, I saw the bacon bits scattered throughout.  Aw geez!  Then I realized I had made my daughter a sandwich.  With meat.  Fortunately, I was able to speak with her before she left the house and she left the sandwich behind.

This is how it usually starts for me every year.  I eat something I shouldn’t or sign up for too many Lenten emails and I end up reading them in one sitting instead of deeply pondering them in a glorious meditative way one by one.

Then there’s the thoughts on giving up social media.  A lot of people abandon all their accounts and do what?  Go to the desert?  Hole up in a cave?  I’m not sure.  I would be terrified that my likes, followers and subscriptions would be lost forever and I would return to an empty internet.

The challenge of Lent is going to get even more interesting for me when I leave for vacation on Friday.  I’m going to New York with my daughter.  Thank God I didn’t give up shopping (I have in the past)!  I’ve already made my wish list of what I might purchase to commemorate our trip.  The lure of dessert is going to be tough though.

My fear of flying has greatly improved!  After I wrote that post so many people came forward and offered advice and prayer.  Layne Dagget of, called me up and spoke with me for 45 minutes!  My fellow blogger, Kim Strickland, (also an airline pilot), offered her help.  Since then I have not had a panic attack and I’ve been able to concentrate on looking forward to our trip and not being afraid.

For extra insurance, I had Fr. Li bless me and I said a prayer at the massive St. Christopher statue at St. Therese Chinese Catholic Church.  I’ve been saying my rosary every night, a habit I had broken.

I may have gotten off to a rocky start, but I think it’s going to be a very productive Lent.
