Migraines...Why Oh Why?


I have suffered from migraines for 20+ years. First we thought it was because I was grinding my teeth in college. So the dentist fit me with a mouthguard to wear every night. Sure, it minimized the frequency of the migraines, but they never went away entirely.

Fast forward many years to my first pregnancy at 28. I got the worst headaches I’ve ever had in my life. And of course when you’re pregnant you can’t take much in the way of medicine to help alleviate the pain. I just suffered….

After I gave birth to my first son, the migraines continued. Excedrin Migraine usually did the trick to get rid of them.

Four years later, another pregnancy and more migraines. After this son was born, the migraines continued again. But after a few years the Excedrin Migraine stopped working. The headaches were getting more frequent. Now they were starting in the middle of the night and waking me up at about 3am nearly everyday.

I went to see Neurologist at that time and had a CT scan. Luckily everything was clear. But the migraines continued.

After several more years, the next step was to see a chiropractor (I was willing to try anything). He adjusted me and that helped for awhile too. When the migraines came back full force, my chiropractor suggested certain vitamins; try eating protein before bed; drink plenty of water…blah, blah, blah. I tried it all. But the migraines continued.

Granted, they were less frequent. But after suffering for several more years, I was back at the Neurologist. Scan was again clear. My doctor finally gave me some “emergency” prescription meds for the migraines to use when the Excedrin Migraine didn’t work.

Today was one of those days. Woken up at 4am this morning with a severe migraine, I took my Exedrin and headed to the couch. Got the ice pack and put my peppermint essential oils (yes trying those too) on my temples and on the back of my neck.

Five hours later I was still suffering.  Got my kids off to school (barely) and went back to bed after taking my emergency meds.  After a two hour nap I feel much better.

I think this migraine is caused by stress. I am planning a big St. Baldrick’s head shaving event for this Sunday and have lots to do. Between working two jobs, the kids 3 soccer teams and life as a mom and wife I’m nervous it all won’t get done.

I am a worrier to the extreme. I get stressed very easily and this certainly doesn’t help with my migraines. When I do get the migraines, it makes me step back and realize I need to relax, calm down and try to not be 100% on all the time. It’s not good for my health and certainly doesn’t help me from eliminating the migraines.

Or maybe I need a new pillow?  I’ve tried foam pillows, soft pillows, firm pillow and no change.  But I buy cheap pillows.  Maybe I should try a good quality, more expensive pillow.  Going to go get one tonight.  I’m desperate. Don’t understand why I have to suffer with migraines (along with the millions of other people) and wish they could find a cause and a cure!

I have also thought about starting Yoga for several months…I have heard that might help. I try to meditate but never find the time (I need to find the time). Maybe I’ll stop and do that right now. I’m feeling better, so let’s try to keep it that way and make it a beautiful day. And I’d like to have more migraine free beautiful days to come!
