Bears general manager Ryan Pace has now taken a safety in three straight drafts.

On Saturday, the Bears selected Alabama safety Eddie Jackson with the No. 112 overall pick. In prior drafts, Pace took Adrian Amos (2015 – 5th round) and Deon Bush (2016 – 4th round). Also, last year’s fourth round selection Deiondre’ Hall is going to be tested at safety this off-season.

Note: The Bears moved up to No. 112 by sending the Rams picks No. 117 (fourth round) and No. 197 (sixth round).

Jackson spent four seasons with the Crimson Tide. He started four of seven games as a freshman at cornerback, adding one interception and three pass breakups.

As a sophomore, he tore his right ACL in spring practice but came back to start 10 of 11 games at cornerback, adding one interception and six pass breakups.

The 6’0″, 201-pounder flourished as a junior moving to safety. Jackson hauled in six interceptions (two returned for touchdowns) as he led the defense in that category.

As a senior captain, he started eight games, adding one interception (for a touchdown) before breaking his leg against Texas A&M on the second punt return of the day.

Most impressively, Jackson had 11 punt returns for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

Final thoughts: Free safety was a clear need despite Amos, Bush, Hall, Harold Jones-Quartey, Quintin Demps and DeAndre Houston-Carson all under contract. Jackson is a playmaker when healthy whether that is on the backend or as a returner. The Bears will find a way to develop him.
