After taking two defensive backs in the fourth round in Deon Bush and Deiondre’ Hall, the Bears snagged highly talented safety DeAndre Houston-Carson from William & Mary (No. 185 overall).

The two-time FCS All-American was a four-year starter for the Tribe where he totaled 293 tackles including a team-best 109 stops as a senior along with four interceptions.

The 6’1″, 201-pounder added four touchdowns last season (a school record 94-yard pick-six in the win, a 65-yd blocked FG return, a 70-yd blocked PAT return and a blocked a punt that resulted in a team safety).

In four seasons, he had nine blocked kicks, served as a gunner for William & Mary and did just about everything for this team. A wrist injury suffered on a blocked punt limited him to nine games as a junior, but he started all 45 games that he appeared in from 2012-15.

He started his first three years as a cornerback before making the switch to free safety where he saw career-highs in nearly every category. Special teams is where he excels as he says he takes pride in it via a conference call with the Chicago media.

Note: Houston-Carson joins former William & Mary defensive backs who made it to the NFL, Mark Kelso (10th round, 1985), Darren Sharper (second round, 1997), Derek Cox (third round, 2009) and B.W. Webb (fourth round, 2013).

Final Thoughts

Nicknamed ‘DHC’, he simply made plays for his team. Aggressive as a downhill runner, he isn’t afraid to step into a hit. Along with Bush, the duo brings plenty of power to the Bears’ safety core. Antrel Rolle might not be around much longer.

A source tells me that Houston-Carson is a stud and an absolute fabulous player. Either way, the Bears have plenty of versatility in their secondary with the additions of the three D’s: Deon Bush, Deiondre’ Hall and DeAndre Houston-Carson.

Hall and Houston-Carson are the first two picks by Pace out of the FCS.
