"El Nudo"

If things continue the way they are, when Dylan grows up he will either live in an isolated tropical island or in a nudist colony. This boy does NOT want to keep his clothes on.

It is cold outside. Even with the thermostat at 71 degrees, I walk around the house all day long in sweatpants and a sweatshirt. The minute we walk into the door, Dylan starts taking off his clothes, item by item, until he is either in his undies or absolutely naked (at which point I make him at least put his undies back on). I spend most of my day picking up shirts, pants and socks off the floor.

If we put his clothes back on, they are off again within minutes, so at this point I have just decided to give up and let him roam about the house in his [almost] natural state as long as it’s only the three of us in the house. That leads to a lot less work for Mami and Daddy and one very happy little boy, whom we have nicknamed “El Nudo.”

This might be the end of the dilemma, if it wasn’t for the fact that “El Nudo” has no shame and doesn’t care at all about disrobing in front of company. Take the time a few months back when he was at the McDonald’s Playland and took off his pants in the bouncy-bounce. Or when he went to the bathroom at the nearby Park District facility, emerged with nothing on but his shirt, and streaked around the ladies’ room until I caught him and made him put his pants back on, to the amusement of everyone but me.

On Thanksgiving, we played a movie for the kids after dinner so that the adults could linger at the table and chat. Lo and behold, who do you think comes running in with a huge smile on his face and only a shirt on? That’s right… “El Nudo.” I think he tried to pull the same thing during Christmas celebrations at Grandma’s house but Bill managed to stop him before he got too far.

At first I thought he did all this because he had recently learned how to take off his clothes, and it was the excitement of showing off his new skill, but it’s been months now and I don’t know WHY he’s still doing it. Is it just a comfort factor? Do I dress him too warmly? Does he do it for the attention?

I am stumped. One thing seems certain, though. “El Nudo” appears to be here to stay.

Both my girls have gone through this stage. My youngest, at age 4, still does it, completely buff. I heard I did it, too. And as a child, my mother had a fascination of dancing with her underwear on her head. Genetic? No...just plain kid stuff.

Maybe as toddlers or preschoolers, kids still have an underlying desire to go back to the womb. After all, they are still close in age to that stage and when they were last in their full glory. :)

Either way, we keep our house at 63 in the winter (as a result lower bills and less colds and flu). And guess what? My girls STILL dress down. :)

  • Khadine ese nene es mitad puertorro. Everybody knows a true Puerto Rican boy is at least shirtless all the time. This was so funny.
