Caregiving involves practical skills like providing personal care and managing long-term care finances, but it also requires emotional, relationship and self-care skills to keep the caregiver healthy, grounded and connected to a support network.
In fact, I would argue that developing these “wellness” skills beyond practical knowledge is probably the most important process for family caregivers to pursue. When caregivers nurture their emotional and relational needs, the practical skills – even ones as taxing as bathing a loved one or performing complicated medical tasks – seem to come easier.
That’s why I was so pleased to read about the new class, Powerful Tools for Caregivers, being offered by Rush University Medical Center’s Health and Aging Services.
The 6-week group begins April 24 and is still accepting registrants.
According to Anne Millheiser, Coordinator of Resource Centers at Rush University Medical Center, Powerful Tools for Caregivers is evidence-based, educational, and focused on the following skill sets:
- Stress reduction
- Modifying negative self-talk
- Enhancing communication with family members and service providers
- Navigating challenging situations
- Making difficult decisions
- Coping with difficult feelings
Because many family caregivers are employed, the program will be held from 5:30 – 7 PM on Thursdays at the Tower Resource Center, 1620 W. Harrison Street, Suite 04527 in Chicago.
There is a fee of $30 for members of the Rush Generations program (for more information on that, click here) or $50 for non-members. Each participant receives a caregiver helpbook along with the knowledge, skills and camaraderie that will flow from each meeting.
