Chicago Observes Memorial Day 2013 Photo Gallery
Chicago is a truly proud and great city, and today Chicago honored our fallen heroes and also recognized Illinois Gold Star Families, families of those who have died for our country.
Official ceremonies began today at Daley Plaza with the 2013 Chicago Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony and the Memorial Day Parade, considered one of the largest in the nation. The parade down State Street included high school marching bands, veterans groups and many JROTC cadets from Chicago.
The ceremony opened with a musical selection performed by the 85th Army Band and followed by a welcome by Alderman James A. Balcer. The National Anthem was performed by Devin Valez of Rickover Naval Academy JROTC. “God Bless America” was sung by Leslie Beaukelman, USO Illinois, and the Invocation was given by Chaplain Chad Haan of the United States Navy.
In attendance were Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Governor Pat Quinn, Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Bronze Star recipient Lieutenant Commander James P. Gennari and many others giving a fitting tribute honoring the many in the military who died serving our country.
