Boss Monster has gone Virtual

Boss Monster has gone Virtual

Boss Monster is a popular dungeon-building card that has quickly become popular in the world of indie tabletop games. Players get to be the final Boss at the end of their own deadly dungeon. With a fun 8-bit art style and clever flavor text, it’s easy to see why this competitive card game is both nostalgic and addicting.

Publisher Brotherwise Games has made Boss Monster playable and available on multiple platforms including a card game, video game, and smart phone apps. Now Boss Monster is venturing out into a new space…a virtual space!

AltspaceVR, a social virtual reality company has teamed up with Brotherwise Games to bring Boss Monster to a virtual reality space near you. I had an opportunity to chat with Boss Monster co-creator, Chris O’Neal and AltspaceVR’s Head of Product, Debby Shepard about their new venture.

Debby Shepard explains, “AltspaceVR is compatible with VR headsets, but if you don’t own one, you can still explore the virtual space with your home PC.” Users just have to sign up for an AltspaceVR account, download the software and explore this virtual world where they can interact with other users in real time. For the full VR experience, AltspaceVR works with the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or Samsung Gear VR.

Users can then play Boss Monster in a virtual room, at a virtual table, with real people! Part of the reason I love tabletop gaming as a hobby, is because it is so social. This is what makes the VR version of Boss Monster different from the video game. Chris O’Neal says, “It’s more interactive. This will gives the players the feeling of sitting around a table and playing a game, when you can’t get your friends together to play in real life.” In this virtual world, you can get up and move, look around the room, you could even look at other players hands if you stand behind them (which is totally cheating and not encouraged at all).

The best part of this whole magical merger is that this virtual experience is free! Just sign up, get in there, meet some neat people, and start playing. There are no fees for using AltspaceVR.
