Taking some time off of work to stay home with family? You may want to be careful how much time you take.

Consider this a public service announcement from A City Mom. If you or someone you know has or is taking time away from the work force, please encourage them to read this Huffington Post Article written by my friend Margie Kruse.

A brief excerpt:

“It’s a little-known fact: When one leaves the workforce for more than five years — no matter how long they’ve paid into the system — Social Security Disability benefits evaporate. Simply put, the money you paid into the system is gone, returned to the “pool” for others to use.”

This little known fact has had a devastating impact on Margie’s family, after her sister-in-law, a stay at home mom, was diagnosed with ALS. They are now paying out of pocket (to the tune of $7,000 a month) for her around-the-clock care.

Could your family handle this type of crisis? It’s terrifying to think about–and not just about getting devastatingly sick, but then facing possible financial ruin as well.

Margie has started several fund-raisers to help defray the costs. She’s raffling off her own car, a Jeep, and has started a gofundme page.

However, this post is not so much about raising money for Vicky (Although of course, any and all donations are appreciated.) (And you should know, I plan on winning that Jeep!) as it is about raising awareness for families with stay-at-home parents. PLEASE spread the word!
