Back in college, I worked with a guy who always wore a smile on his face and had an uncanny ability to talk backwards. (Really. Like complete sentences.) Phil Yastrow, or “Smilin’ Phil,” as we used to call him, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2005, in a perfect example of how sometimes bad things happen to really, really good people.
At first his co-workers thought he might have been drunk when he had trouble talking while at work. (Seriously? A man proficient at speaking the English language backwards should not be suspected of drinking when he’s having trouble speaking it forward!) Initially, a stroke was suspected, but after an MRI, MS was confirmed.
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the body. It is unpredictable. Often disabling. And it can and does affect individuals very differently.
But Smilin’ Phil has refused to succumb to what he calls, “this crummy disease.” He’s raised thousands of dollars for MS research – by running marathons, participating in 150-mile bike rides and 10K mud runs. Smilin’ Phil is not taking his diagnosis sitting down.
Here’s where you come in!
Chances are you know someone with MS. A co-worker, a neighbor, a loved one. Quite probably someone you know has MS and you’re not even aware of it. So, help Phil help researchers find a cure for this crummy disease (and even he says “crummy” is too nice of a word for it.)
Phil is participating in the MS 150 Bike Ride from Denver to Fort Collins and back to Denver on June 28-29th. And this year, Phil will add the Century Ride on the first day, for a grand-total of 175 miles.
Now. If my friend with MS can cycle 175 miles in two days, and keep smiling, then you can PLEASE DONATE A FEW BUCKS TO HIS CAUSE
“SM lliK steL!”
(That’s “Let’s Kill MS” for those of you who are not proficient at speaking backwards!)
