Despite the fact that Mitsubishi will be dropping the Galant sedan, Endeavor SUV, and Eclipse sports coupe in 2013, it doesn't mean that the plant in Downstate Normal will be shuttered.
Mitsubishi will build the Outlander Sport crossover SUV at the plant, beginning in 2012.
To do so, the company will invest $45 million, while the state will kick in $30 million in tax incentives.
The company is also expected to bring seven plug-in electric vehicles to market by 2015, and it will set aside 1,000 "i" vehicles, which are due in March, for sale in the Bloomington-Normal area by 2014. That's out of a supply that is expected to only be 15,000 globally in the first three years of production.
Mitsubishi will also loan a small number of electric vehicles to the state fleets for testing purposes.
