Janitors Are Important People Too

One day last week while I was in the bathroom at work, something happened that really bothered me. There was a cleaning person in the bathroom collecting all the garbage. Another woman walks in, washes her hands, and takes a few paper towels to dry them.

She then proceeds to walk around the huge garbage can that the cleaning person was using to collect all the garbage (that had just been emptied by the way) and throws all the paper towels into the now newly emptied garbage can. The cleaning person just stood there and looked at her as she walked around the huge garbage can again, and walked out. Is it just me, or was that kind of rude??

I'm thinking, why not throw your garbage in the can that's right in front of you, instead of making a point of putting it in the one that was just emptied. The cleaning person looked extremely annoyed and maybe that's why I thought it was rude? I wasn't sure.

And then I started to think about the way they keep their heads down and never make eye contact with anyone. The way they seem surprised when I say hello as I pass them in the hallway or wherever.

I remembered being in a hotel once where I said hello to a cleaning lady who responded by telling me that they are not allowed to talk to the guests. Not allowed?? Since when does being a cleaning person mean that you are not worthy of common courtesies? Isn't it a job just like any other job? Aren't they people just like everybody else? Am I the one who's crazy?

I don't know about you, but I'm glad that I can go to work and use a bathroom that isn't so disgusting that I'm afraid or refuse to use it. I'm glad that I can walk to my desk without having to make a path with my foot in front of me. I like the idea of not having my hands stick to my keyboard when I'm typing or to my desk when I go to get something from my drawer.

The cleaning people provide all those things for us. All those comforting things that nobody ever seems to think about. Hopefully, if you didn't already, now you will.  The Janitors who clean those buildings are important too! And from this point on, I'm asking you to acknowledge them when you see them. Say hello and maybe even thank them for keeping your place of work, or the airport or whatever public building you happen to find yourself in, clean enough for you to be able to sit down or take a potty break in peace! Can't hurt, right? So why not?

Happy Monday everyone!! Have a great day at work and don't do anything that will get you fired and/or arrested!
