Employee Of The Month: Bonus or Bull$**t?

Employee Of The Month: Bonus or Bull$**t?

Just recently, I received an e-mail from a reader asking if I'd ever written anything about the whole employee of the month thing. Honestly, I'd never even thought about it. I'm guessing because I've never been employee of the month. ANYWHERE!

I've always felt that giving me my pay on time and leaving me the hell alone to get my work done was good enough. Even though the quality of my work has always been good, including the jobs I've had that I hated, I think that my personality always counts me out.

Have you ever worked with someone who always speaks their mind? That person who actually says all the things in the meeting that you want to say but won't for fear of being fired? Well, I'm that person. I suspect that this is the reason that an employee of the month award has never cast a shadow across my desk. And I'm okay with that. If my telling you what I truly think when you ask me, means that I'll never win the award, you can keep it! And you can keep on keeping it!

I would also guess that anyone else who speaks their mind at work has also never been employee of the month. Besides, I kinda figured that this is the kind of thing that only the "Teacher's Pet" type employee ever gets anyway. But, I could be wrong.

Any who, I asked the reader what it was about the employee of the month program at their job that had struck such a chord with them. Here's what she said;

"After being a stay at home mom for nearly a quarter of a century, I went back   to work. I got a job at a grocery store chain. My first duties were pushing the carts from the parking lot back into the store, bagging groceries for the customers and (my favorite!) sweeping the parking lot of the debris whether it was raining or snowing.

Eventually I became a cashier. I thought I was a good employee. In the 5 yrs that I've worked there, I have been sick three days and tardy once. I do what I'm told and I get along with everyone.

There is one thing that puzzles me: I have never been Employee of the Month. This month it really bothered me because the person who got it this month has only been on the job one month!

You read that correctly. One month. How does that happen? What did they do in one month that I haven't done in 5 yrs?  Believe me; I've been tempted to ask.

Recently, I was assigned to clean the whole store.  I go from department to department and scrub.  You might find me armed with cleaning products, paper towels, and rubber gloves.  Once, while up on a ladder, a customer stood gazing at me.  I asked if I could help her and she said no.  After a moment's hesitation, she asked, "Are you being punished?" I assured her I wasn't, but it probably does look that way.

After one particularly long day, I was in the break room, when one of my fellow employees remarked that I should get employee of the month next month and he was going to speak to the assistant store manager about it.  To be honest, I laughed so hard!  You know why? It'll never happen."

What a shame! Now, I'm not keeping score here, but if I attempted to tally it up, it looks like employee of the month is Employee of the month article pic 2

Have a great day at work today (or tomorrow for those off on this glorious holiday), and please don't do anything that will get you fired and/or arrested!
