Labor Day 2013 is this weekend and time is running out to make plans for a memorable goodbye to summer. If you don’t have plans yet, don’t worry, there are still many fun family friendly weekend getaways you can take at the last minute and still have an amazing time. Here are the top three last minute Labor Day road trips near Chicago that you can enjoy with your kids and family.
Labor Day Road Trip Hotspots
#1: The Wisconsin Dells: The water parks at the dells are all open until Monday, making this a great spot to hit this weekend. After this weekend, it will be reduced hours only at the indoor parks. I recommend the Wilderness Resort for the two level lazy river. The fun doesn’t stop at the strip though, be sure to spend sometime in nearby state parks, like Devil’s Lake where you can sunbath on a picturesque sandy beach or hike to the top of towering bluffs granting excellent views.
#2 Cedar Point, Sandusky Ohio: This iconic American classic drastically reduces hours after this weekend as well. The island that hosts the coaster capital of the world is also home to several resorts, a water park and numerous restaurants. The resort is on the beach of Lake Erie and offers excellent views at all hours of the day. For an extra treat, be sure to ride their new coaster, The Gatekeeper. Sadly, The Gatekeeper puts Chicago’s X-Flight to shame with its smoothness and gliding sensation. Outside of Sandusky there is also the African Safari Wildlife Park that is an once-in-a-lifetime experience. You can feed animals including deer, antelope, buffalo, zebras, giraffes and elk right from your car window.
#3 St. Louis: For an area that has tons to do, you just can’t beat St. Louis. The Gateway Arch National Park offers unmatched views from the top of the arch and the museum beneath the arch offers a fun yet educational experience. The St. Louis Zoo is world class and has excellent animal exhibits to enjoy. If your looking for a thrill, your Six Flags Great America season passes also get you free admission to Six Flags St. Louis
