Afternoon notes: Winning and feeling better while doing it

Afternoon notes: Winning and feeling better while doing it
The Baseball Prospectus’ Hit List power rankings–based on three different types of pythagorean calculations and league strength–have the White Sox as 2nd in all of baseball. The difference between them and No. 1 Texas is significant, but BP calculates their chances of making the playoffs at 61.8%, which has raised 27.6% in the last week.... Read more »

To the Simple Google Search, and Beyond!
Earlier this week I was settling in to some weekly White Sox prospect news by the venerable Larry of South Side Sox when I read this: Since there still really isn’t all that much to discuss, I’ll fill some space by commenting on a 2000+ word screed about the Charlotte Knights and stadium subsidies. These are the sorts... Read more »

Ventura meets the press, rings in new era of open-ended coach-speak

Ventura meets the press, rings in new era of open-ended coach-speak
With SoxFest coming up this weekend, new manager Robin Ventura is hitting all the press stops to drum up enthusiasm for the new season.  It’s nothing but a heart-pounding thrill-ride of understated professionalism. While Ozzie occasionally inspired the instinct to wince and hope he would work his way through every interview without a risque statement,... Read more »

Alexei Ramirez is fine, when so much else isn't

Alexei Ramirez is fine, when so much else isn't
It’s just too dead of a period of time in the White Sox news cycle to pass up some media criticism.  That rainy day post about the biggest WPA swings of the season can always wait another day… The Tribune’s White Sox beat writer Mark Gonzales took out the time Thursday to identify Alexei Ramirez... If he did it...

If he did it...
Is it safe to say that the relationship between the White Sox and its manager Ozzie Guillen was completely broken during the 2011 season?  I feel that it is. Guillen left after a bizarre contract dispute, his worst season in terms of job performance, and curiously bolted to his next position instantaneously.  The pure swiftness... Read more »

Ventura aftermath

Ventura aftermath
It seems like I should be able to have a larger and more layered reaction to the White Sox making an out of left-field hire of an ex-player with no coaching experience. Robin Ventura as a manager is such blank slate though, searching for more angles on him is like peering into one o those... Read more »

The White Sox didn't have a game on Monday, so you get this instead
Birthday! Monday, August 15th is the birthday of former White Sox team owner, and former stadium namesake, Charles Comiskey.  I don’t imagine there was much celebration, because it tends to damper birthday celebrations when the guest of honor isn’t there.  Especially if he isn’t there because he’s dead. Celebrate Charles Comiskey’s 152nd birthday?  Why? He... Read more »

White Sox Week That Was - 5/23-5/29: Stupid shortcomings! Stop revealing yourselves!

White Sox Week That Was - 5/23-5/29: Stupid shortcomings! Stop revealing yourselves!
Crud. // Fred Thornhill, Reuters Well, this is well-worn ground. It’s the end of May, the White Sox are stuck on 24 wins, Mark Teahen is hurt, the DH is a sinkhole, and Ozzie is…well…he’s acting like a manager who has a great deal of his security tied to making a division title push on... Terry Francona negotiates the supposed end of the Guillen-Jenks feud

Well that was quick. Just a day after the verbal dust-up that emerged, and threatened to re-emerge even bigger between Bobby Jenks and Ozzie Guillen, Terry Francona informed the press that he spoke to Jenks and contacted Guillen, and conveyed the same message to each: ‘Knock if off, eh?’ “That’s over,” Francona told the Boston...
