Kate Middleton's topless photos: Leave the girl and her boobs alone

Once upon a time there was a beautiful girl named Kate. And Kate had boobs that no one cared about, except Prince William maybe, but no one paid too much attention to them. Then the common girl married the Prince and became a Duchess. And apparently that meant her boobs were to become really important.

They are so important that a photographer found a way to photograph them from a half mile away from where she sunbathed topless. This was done while she and William were vacationing and thus, in a private setting. Since the Paparazzi has evidently not learned it's lesson with the untimely death of Princess Diana, they continue on their quest to drive the new Duchess crazy. One editor, Michael O'Kane of The Irish Daily Star went so far as to say that publishing the photos was "a service to our readers". What??

Why is this a service? Kate has been like a breath of fresh air to the world. Beautiful, classy, elegant. So she took off her top on a private vacation with her husband. I have vacationed in countries that have areas where sunbathing topless, even nude is perfectly normal. So if she chooses to go topless why is this such a huge event?

There are several reasons that there is a fascination with breasts. Men find them calming. Nothing like resting their head on a well developed rack. They are a sign of fertility. The bigger they are, the better they will feed the children. I'm sure there are many other reasons. I'm also sure that there are many women worldwide who have no problem having theirs photographed, published, worshipped, etc.

So, with all of the available boobs to ogle, why can't the Paparazzi leave poor Kate's alone? It is considered a legal matter at this point as in Britian; what has happened is considered an invasion of privacy. Amazingly, British tabloids have not published the pictures as they are all too aware of the ramifications as well as the memories of Diana.

Kate Middleton has spent the past year dazzling the world with her fashion sense. Designers clamour to dress her; she looks impeccable no matter what she wears. So why can't we just enjoy her in her various ensembles instead of cheap shots of her topless? Leave the girl alone. Let her live her charmed life with her Prince.

And if she wants to enjoy a topless afternoon, lay off the cameras and find some other boobs to photograph.

  • "Men find them calming." Uh, no. Quite the opposite.

  • In reply to Jimmy Greenfield:

HAHAHA, it's seriously what some research found. I thought the same as you :)

  • I wonder how much of this are the associated tabloids publishing pretty indistinguishable pictures (yes I looked) as opposed to the Royals making a stink over it in the courts. As you mention, supposedly topless is normal in parts of Mediterranean Europe. And nobody is seeking an injunction against TMZ for the pictures of Prince Harry's handful.

And since you mention Diana, maybe the Brits should be boycotting France for their holidays.

Finally, apparently these paparazzi didn't get the evidence of which the other tabloids are interested, whether the Dutchess is preggers.

One might feel pride that the royal family can stop a media entity from running images of its private affairs but then one has to also wonder when it and other elite and powerful offices then start going after media entities seeking criminal prosecution rights as well for what it perceives it to be offensive and a slight of hand.

It's one thing to preserve ones privacy but perhaps it's even more important the media be allowed to express and examine ideas that entities such as the royal family from time to time may dislike. The freedom of our society demands it. Or does it?
