American Idol: Don't cry for Pia, she'll be just fine

I know, I know. All of America is sitting in stunned silence at the "shocking" Idol elimination of Pia Toscana. Once you've scraped your jaws up off the floor, take a good look at the whole scenario.

This season is turning into "The Bachelor" only in the sense that each week is becoming "the most shocking moment in Idol history". We already went through the elimination of Casey, followed by what we all know now was a way too early save.
Every week Randy Jackson says to vote for your favorite if you want to keep them in. Apparently either everyone's TV was on mute when he said that or people were busy fast forwarding their DVR's and missed it. After last night's performances, which I actually thought were the best I have ever seen in a night, I had this weird feeling that Pia was going to go home.
It had nothing to do with her not being incredibly talented, of course she is! And gorgeous to boot. But just like Randy said you'd have to vote to keep her in. Those phones were busy dialing and texting for Paul who almost got his pearly whites booted off last week. There were votes for Elvis, I mean Scotty who has the devotion of screaming little girls with cell phones.
No one is going to NOT vote for Casey since he was saved. James always will have sympathy for his illness (I get that)  and his Adam Lambert like screaming gets 'em every time. Haley has the votes of people trying to keep her from the bottom three. The rest are a toss up.
Now, think about a few years back when Chris Daughtry was eliminated. Being a huge fan I was shocked. How could that have ever happened? And to cap it off, Taylor Hicks (who??) was that season's winner. Daughtry looked like someone punched him in the stomach that night but in retrospect the public did him a favor. It gave him more time to kick start his Grammy winning career.
The one save per season was created for situations just like this. But when you use it the second week of competition this is what happens. Now I am left wondering who is going to win?? I was pretty sure it was going to be Pia.
But she will be quite the winner without Idol. I am guessing that by tomorrow morning record producers will be lining up to sign her. Magazines will be featuring her on their covers, cosmetic companies will contract her to be their spokesperson and agencies will be looking to represent her. So no tears for Pia. Just get your dialing fingers in working order to keep the person you want to stay in or no bitching when they're voted off.

  • I agree Pia will do just fine without an American Idol win; but it would have been nice to have her on the show a few more weeks.

ps. The site Vote for the Worst is campaigning for Paul. Yuck.

I agree, she was so good I really enjoyed watching her. I wish someone would be able to get that web site off the internet - Paul did great this week and deserved to stay. Some people just enjoy causing conflict and being nasty, so sad!

I don't feel bad for her at all. Just like millions, just really shocked that she lost. It is puzzling how America votes. I am sure the judges regret using their save on Casey. It would be a bigger shock if he ends up winning. I also had a funny feeling about Pia after her performance. Though she sang an up-tempo song, she didn't impress me too much with her stage presence. She was pretty much stationery for the most part. If you watch Jacob, he too is a "ballad" singer without the entertainment value. It was more irritating that Stefano keeps surviving. I suppose Kris Allen fans are voting to keep him alive. No matter the results, it always entertaining to see how it all unfolds.

I agree 100% about Stefano - I was positive he was out. My bad!!

I agree wholeheartedly with the author's premise. There are too many teenybopper girls repeatedly voting for the guys they think are cute. Witness the mob of girls who ran up to the stage to 17-year old Scotty after his Elvis song. Not that Scotty isn't talented. But Stefano beating Pia? This is a travesty.
I, for one, am looking forward to Simon Cowell's new singing competition show. Age will not be a factor. Remember Susan Boyle from London? If the teeny boppers were in control, she would have been booted, too. Pia will go places despite the fact that kids control the votes for AI. I agree with the comments that the voting system must be changed. If they could control one vot per person, that would be great for starters.

  • I must be living in lala land as I didn't realize only At and T customers could text. That's how I do it. You still can use the internet which I use as well. Idol does need to change a few things for sure. I wonder now who will be the last singer standing!
