Okay so it was a few days ago. Lady Gaga's arrival at The Grammy Awards in a large egg. I don't know what I expected when she emerged, but it wasn't quite as crazy as I thought it would be. She wasn't draped in red meat or covered in fake blood; she just had a few strange bumps on her shoulders and cheeks.
The next night she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and again, a bit off the wall with the bizarre sunglasses but nothing raw or bloody. I don't dare think that she won't up her craziness again but for now, perhaps her talent will actually be something that people can recognize.
A most controversial performer, this 24 year old phenomenon is indeed an extremely talented individual. I know that I heard her other songs a million times before "Bad Romance" but once that one was ingrained in my head, there were many nights I had that dreaded earworm. I kept waking up at night with "I want your ugly, I want your disease" running through my brain.
I admit though that I love the song. Not because its popular or because she dresses like she can't seem to forget it isn't halloween. I love it because it has a good tune and she has a great voice.
Back in the 1970's when Elton John first appeared on the scene, those of us who are old enough to remember can picture his outlandish, crazy costumes. It was a gimmick that now, as we fast forward to present day he surely didn't need. His voice and talent spoke for itself.
In 1974, I saw John Denver (please no ridicule, I loved the guy) at The Chicago Stadium. He was dressed in jeans, a flannel and played his guitar. The audience was mesmerized. Just a man and his guitar.
We have had many recording artists that have gained recognition through dressing in costume (Boy George) and wearing bizarre make-up (Marilyn Manson). Madonna started many a fashion trend through her bustier wearing days. My sense of wonder is only in that when there is true talent, why all the other "stuff" is necessary.
Just listen to Lady Gaga's "Speechless" live on you tube. Close your eyes and hear what a beautiful voice she really has. Then tell me if you think all the other stuff is really necessary.
