Sesame Street responds to Bert & Ernie Poll

Sesame Street has responded to the Petition asking for Bert & Ernie to get married:

Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.

  • Really. I guess we shouldn't make assumptions about Tinky Winky, Geoff Peterson, Wavy Rancheros, and about 40% of the characters on Family Guy and The Simpsons.

After all, "what's the real deal" about Smithers "is that he's Mr. Burns' assistant. He's in his early forties, is unmarried, and currently resides in Springfield." And, unlike Troy McClure, the inference in that show that Dr. Marvin Monroe was dead turned out to be false.

Also, Sesame Street made a big deal about Zoe, because up to then she was the only female muppet (I guess not counting Grungetta). So, CTW shouldn't have it both ways.

  • Jay Leno even had a shot at this last night. "The economy is so bad that Bert and Ernie got married so they could get the tax deduction."

  • In reply to jack:

How I WISH we could get a tax deduction. Since Civil Unions and Same-Sex Marriage laws are only at the State Level there are no Federal Tax benefits....in fact there's a big debate going on right now in Illinois because the Tax Department is not changing their forms to allow same sex couples to file joint returns. They claim that they take their lead from the Federal Government and since there is no change there, there is no change for Illinois....even though Civil Unions are legal here.
