The Music Box Theatre was filled to the brim with blood, gore, drag queens and all sorts of monsters this weekend for the Chicago premiere of "All About Evil"
I haven't been to a midnight movie in ages, but there wasn't any way that I was going to be missing this one! Josh Grannel, better known as Peaches Christ, wrote and directed "All About Evil" and presented it in 4D - the two extra D's included a great performance by Peaches with some classic monster backups and a duet of Female Trouble with Mink Stole - who also features in the film.
"All About Evil" is the story of a mousy librarian who by way of her father's death becomes part owner of a decrepit movie theater that primarily shows horror movies. When she kills her mother and it gets accidentally captured on the in-house surveillance and shown to the audience - they go crazy for it...and so does the librarian. The movie has a host of top names including Mink Stole, Cassandra Peterson (better known as Elvira), Peaches Christ herself and Natasha Lyonne.
The movie is campy, gory and a few times made me clutch my pearls in horror and close my eyes! It was funny and bloody and sometimes just ilicited a groan from deep in my stomach as I couldn't bear to tear my eyes away from the screen.
Peaches had invited the event goers to dress in their best 'gore couture' and many of them took on the challenge. About a dozen or so participants paraded across the stage to see who had the best gore couture and it came down to a tie. One of the winners had hair that was at least 4 foot tall and 3 foot wide (we thought she was fabulous until she sat IN FRONT of us) and Jenny who was as skinny as the other contestants hair was wide - it was truly a show in unto itself.
If you missed this screening, don't fret there are more scheduled through October. The closest is Minneapolis on November 13th, but if you're willing to travel check the site for all the dates.
