Are you a square dancing fanatic? Then you won't want to miss the Chi-Town Shakedown taking place at the Hilton Chicago over the 4th of July Weekend. This is the 27th Annual Convention of (International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs) and will surely have your toes-a-tapping!
More than 1000 dancers from around the world will descend on the city and participate in all sorts of dances over the long weekend. Starting it all off on Thursday July 1st will be the Trails End Dance where all of the conventioneers will gather in the Grand Ballroom and dance to three local callers. Don't square dance - don't worry.
During that first dance they're inviting everyone from the community to stop by and learn as they'll be teaching basic square dance moves to the uniniated. I haven't square danced since I was in the fourth grade and we performed during our annual May Day event....I'm sure that this will be a lot more fun than that.
That is just the tip of the iceberg though as numerous events are planned throughout the weekend including an Opening Ceremonies where you'll get to meet members from all 52 participating clubs; The Chicago Round Up Dance where you can practice your two-stepping and even a 'Fun Badge Tour' that will take busloads of dancers around the city where they'll do "flash mob square dancing" for 10-15 minutes before moving onto the next location.
