Last night State Representative Deborah Mell announced on the WTTW program Chicago Tonight her engagement to her longtime partner Christin Baker.
Unfortunately Mell and Baker will need to travel to Iowa to get married because same-sex marriage in Illinois is still not legal. Just last week Equality Illinois organized a Lobby Day for constituents across the state to go to Springfield to talk to our elected officials about SB1716 that is currently on the floor in the House of Representatives.
Mell says that today she plans to make 'a big deal' out of it today on the House floor and ask for 'a point of personal privilege' from Speaker Michael Madigan to discus it - hopefully raising the awareness to other lawmakers. One of the things we heard over and over last week was that "we're close to passing SB1716 but we still need more votes" and that most of those no votes are coming from the Southern half of the state.
