Campit Outdoor Resort, the popular gay campground in Saugatuck, MI was recently vandalized with gay hate graffiti.
The Holland Sentinel is reporting that a swastika and the words "Fags dont belong" were spray painted on a fence at the popular campground.
I know many of my friends spend long weekends at Campit and several have permanent campers set up there so they can head over at a moments notice.
Saugatuck is just a short drive from Chicago and it is very popular with the LGBT community. For 40 of it's 50 years the campground has been a gay and lesbian hangout with spaces for campers, RV's and tents and even cabins, sleeping cabins and a bed and breakfast.
The paper reports that 'People in passing vehicles have yelled anti-gay slurs before, according to neighbor Robert Wojcik, but nothing as serious as the recent vandalism.
The person or people who damaged the property could face penalties for the crime, but not added hate crime charges, according to Harold Core, director of public affairs at the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.
Sexual orientation is not protected under state law, he said.
The vandalism is not a violent act, so it would not qualify as a federal hate crime under last year's Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
