Fantasia in The Color Purple is amazing!

Fantasia Barrino OWNS the role of Cellie in the current production of The Color Purple playing at the Arie Crown Theater through Sunday August 6th.

Last night was my first trip to the Arie Crown Theater, even though it's a "bit out of the way" from the regular Theater District, it was well worth the effort to get there to watch The Color Purple.

This wasn't the first time that I saw this show, but it was the first time that I remember the show!  I had seen it the first time it was in town, in 2007 when it began the National Tour, and even though I enjoyed the show at that time, it wasn't all that memorable.  The current show though will be remembered for a long, long time.  The cast is remarkable, the voices, the dancing, the timing is impeccable.  Although Fantasia was my "favorite" part of the show, watching her transform on stage from a meek 14 year old girl to a wise, strong woman through the course of the show, it was all of the other "little pieces" that really make this show.

Even though the topics at hand are difficult ones to discuss: incest, sexual abuse, control and power over others; the show is surprisingly comedic at times.  At times there were large responses from the audience over lines, actions or characters on stage - particularly the "Greek Chorus" of Church Ladies that lead you through the story.

Many of the cast members, including Nettie and Sofia are reprising roles that they introduced on Broadway or started with the National Tour.  It is amazing to see this team of actors and actress pull off this musical flawlessly with energy, excitement and love.

The Color Purple is playing for a limited run of only a week, through August 6th, and Fantasia is only reprising her role as Cellie in four cities on this current tour, so you need to get to the Arie Crown Theater and see her!  I'll be the first to admit that I didn't (and still don't) follow American Idol on a regular basis, but from Fantasia's performance last night it is easy to tell why she won in 2004.  She has an amazing stage presence, voice and talent.

The only fault I have though has nothing to do with the show but with the audience.  Who felt it appropriate about halfway through Act Two to whip out their cameras and start taking pictures.  There were random pops of flashes throughout the second act which were distracting - I can only imagine what it was like on stage.  As the last song was beginning more cameras were pulled from their hidden spaces and lit up the audience like a concert.  I've only got one tip for you: when you're trying to sneak a picture turn the flash OFF, otherwise you're only gonna get the back of the persons head that's sitting in front of you.

On the way home after the show, we had a rather heated discussion about Cellie's bisexuality versus homosexuality?  What do you think....was Cellie bisexual and that she had feelings for both Mister and Shug or was she a lesbian who only had feelings for Shug and other women?
