Just days after a leaked report outlined that runner Caster Semenya had no uterus and testes instead of ovaries, she has been placed on suicide watch over concerns of her mental health.
MP Butana Komphela, chair of South Africa's sports committee, said: "She is like a raped person.
"She is afraid of herself and does not want anyone near her. If she commits suicide, it will be on all our heads.
"The best we can do is protect her and look out for her during this trying time."
His comments came as South African athletics officials confirmed Semenya was now receiving trauma counselling at the University of Pretoria.
It truly is sad that Caster has been put through all of this, because up until the time that she won that race she had been living her life as she pleased, doing what she liked doing most - running. I'm sure eventually all of these medical issues would have come to light, but to have them strewn about like this has got to be terribly difficult. She has also cancelled all future events and has been in hiding since last Thursday.
