The Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, KS - best known for picketing US military funerals has set it's sights on Chicago once again with scheduled protests at several synagogues around the city starting Monday morning.

Late last year the WBC felt it necessary to bring their particular brand of hatred to the Center on Halsted baring their signs of 'God Hates Fags' 'Fag Xmas' among others.  At that time the WBC did not follow through on their promise to protest directly in front of the Center on Halsted, instead they sought refuge in front of the police station located at the corner of Halsted and Addison so they could make a quick getaway.

Well now they're coming back to protest Synagouges, The DNC and Don Rickles!

Apparently, a performance by Don Rickles at the Auditorium Theater was the original destination of the Church.  But of course in these fiscally difficult times they decided to get the most bang for their buck and spread the hate to the local Jewish community.  If you have time on Monday you should consider joining counter protests against the Westboro Baptist Church at the following synagogues.  The times listed are the times that the WBC has said they will "arrive" so you should plan to arrive 30 minutes earlier to join up with other counter-protesters:

  • Congregation Or Chadash & Emmanuel Congregation - 5959 N Sheridan Rd, 11:15-11:45AM
  • Anshe Emet Synagogue - 3751 N Broadway, 12:00-12:30PM
  • Temple Sholom of Chicago - 3480 N Lake Shore Drive, 12:45-1:15PM
  • Chicago Sinai Congregation and Central Synagogue - 15 W. Delaware, 1:30-2:00PM
  • A meeting of the Democratic National Committee - N. Michigan Ave & E. Wacker Dr, 5-5:45PM
  • Auditorium Theatre - 50 E. Congress Parkway, where Don Rickles will be performing, 6-7:30PM

If you didn't participate in last years counter-protest at the Center on Halsted you should check out this video.  Although they were scheduled to protest for 30 minutes, they didn't last 10 minutes.  Although the WBC is expressing their right to the First Amendment, that doesn't mean we have to sit back and listen to it.  Join in on a peaceful counter-protest to block out the message that WBC is trying to send.
