The season kicks off with Young Frankenstein running from November 3 to December 13. Roger Bart and Shuler Hensley from the original Broadway cast will reprise their role in this North American tour that starts in Providence, RI in September. Here's a video of Roger and Shuler performing earlier this summer at the Broadway in Chicago Concert during Taste of Chicago.
Next in line is In The Heights running from December 15 to Jan 3, over the holidays. I don't know much about this show other than it won Best Musical at the 2008 Tony's. Here's a clip from the same summer concert of In The Heights. It looks like a great show and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I'm really excited about the next show - Dreamgirls - that runs from Jan 10, 2010 to Jan 31 (OMG can you believe we're already planning into next year...ugh). This show is kicking off in Harlem in November and will hit a few places before it gets here so I'm expecting the cast will be phenomenal. I was looking at the site the other day and didn't recognize any of the castmembers - I hope that's a good thing. I saw this show many years ago in Atlanta, it was amazing then and I hope will be amazing now!
I'm a little confused about the next one, I hope they can pull it off. 101 Dalmatians is running from February 16, 2010 to February 28, 2010 - whew that's a long way off! Some of the music is being written by Dennis DeYoung (who was one of the founding members of Styx). We got a chance to see them perform one of the songs from this show at the BIC Concert at the Taste - it seems to be a very interesting show. I can't wait to see exactly what they do to this Disney classic.
I'm excited to see all of the shows next year, especially August Osage and Shrek. I saw Beauty and the Beast years ago when I lived in Atlanta - it was mesmerizing then, and it will be interesting to see The 39 Steps as a play - I love the Hitchcock movie.
They also just announced today that Billy Elliot will begin an extended run on March 18, 2010 at the Ford Center/Oriental Theater before taking off for a mult-city tour - I wonder if will outrun Wicked.
Earlier this week it was announced that Jersey Boys will close on January 10, 2010 so if you haven't seen it then hurry up, what are you waiting for!
This is going to be an amazing theater season in Chicago!
