I am reposting this entry from March 1, 2010 because I came across it in my archives and it really is a pretty darn good list if I do say so myself. I’ve got to really focus if I want to get to all of these things before my kids head off to college.... Read more »
So the trick-or-treating is officially over. Is it too early to talk about winter? Not really, right? Sure the leaves are still on the trees but gusting winds and sub zero temps are just around the corner. Happy Winter Chicagoans!

I am a sucker for the Chicago Children’s Museum
(CCM). Each visit is a chance to discover something new (not just saying that.... it is true) Last week, the CCM debuted a new a permanent exhibit called the Tinkering Lab
. This is a place where kids can use real tools and materials. They love stuff like that. Those crazy kids.
Inspired by the national Maker Movement
, CCM has developed an experience unlike any other in Chicago. This is a DIY maker space for families. Do what you will (or won't) in this unstructured, creative space.
I really dig their new tagline for this exhibit: Real tools. Real science. Really for kids...
Kids home from school again tomorrow? Running out of things to do to keep the learning going (unexpected break in the school schedule be damned!)? I've got a wonderful (FREE!) option for you.
The James Dyson Foundation
in partnership with the Chicago Public Library
is supporting students by offering hands-on engineering workshops every day the strike continues. All this week, the Foundation will host workshops to engage students through practical activities at various Chicago Public Library locations. Participants will build rover racers, construct marble runs, and craft geodesic domes. Even though classes aren't in session, they'll be learning! Snacks will also be offered to students. These workshops will be fun and action packed. See below for all of the details on the remaining workshops (for this week anyway)...

This August, Chicago Children's Museum
(CCM) is showcasing the timelessness of building, tinkering and plain ol' creating by hosting its first-ever Maker Month
. Every afternoon, join local artists, hobbyists, musicians, tinkerers and local Chicago kids to celebrate the joy of making. Every day will feature a different activity, from creating a mini-book to assembling a tasty snack with a chef (mmmm . . . wonder what that is all about).
"So much of what young children learn is a result of their hands-on, concrete experiences,” said Jennifer Farrington, president and CEO of Chicago Children's Museum. “The experience of making things encourages creativity and problem-solving, and has the potential to cultivate life-long learning.”...
