Patience and Perspective: Thoughts on Surviving a Chicago Winter

Patience and Perspective: Thoughts on Surviving a Chicago Winter
Last week was a trying time for Chicago parents (well, all Chicagoans really). The kids were supposed to be heading back to school and families were planning on getting back to a normal schedule after two weeks of holiday break. And then winter completely messed with that plan. Many parents were just plain pissed about the snow and cold and the inconvenience they caused for all of us. Other parents were absolutely irate that school was cancelled. Then there were the folks to couldn't believe that school was NOT cancelled. They were pissed too. Meanwhile, moms complained endlessly about being stuck at home with their kids. For. Another. Day. Parents worried about how this additional missed work time would impact them. Kids complained. Parents complained. People were just so pissed...

Wee Windy City Winter Survival Guide: The Chicago Park District presents Polar Adventure Days
Part of my Chicago winter survival strategy is embracing the chilly outdoor temps. The key to this approach is stocking up on the appropriate bundling equipment (that means long underwear, water-proof gloves, all the really warm stuff). And then get out there on doing something fun in the freezing cold. Winter is here. You can’t... Read more »

Beat the Winter Blahs: An afternoon of sledding at Cricket Hill
I’ve learned that it is better to embrace a Chicago winter rather than fight it. Sure, you could just stay home and be bitter during the (admittedly, often unpleasant) winter months. But if you have little people at your house, you have to brave the temps and get out there and have fun. You’ll be... Read more »

Celebrate the Winter Solstice

Celebrate the Winter Solstice
While we are all busy celebrating the “traditional” holidays, the winter solstice usually passes without most people taking any notice at all.  This is a totally missed opportunity. The winter solstice (occurring on December 22 this year) is a wonderful opportunity for families to take notice of what’s going on around them in the natural... Read more »

Family-Friendly Fondue

If there were ever a time to try fondue — this is it. The weather is miserable. We are basically snowed in — except for absolutely essential outings. Bring on the melted cheese and chocolate, I say! Fondue can be a fun and novel family activity. Plus, it is yummy. Really yummy. Interested? Have a... Read more »

Snow Days: Love 'em or hate 'em?

As a major snow event approaches our fair city, I’ve noticed that Chicago parents seem to fall into two camps. On the one hand, there are those parents who say “let it snow! let it snow! let it snow!” and embrace the high probability that their school-aged kids will be home from school on Wednesday...
