A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to a lovely luncheon hosted by Jennifer Perillo, the author of the new cookbook Homemade with Love. Jennifer is a Brooklyn-based mama of two who has long shared her own style of home cooking on her site In Jennie's Kitchen. Jennie's life was turned upside down when she recently lost her husband. The recipes in her book celebrate some of her husband's family favorites.
Truly, this book is a celebration of the family meal. Jennie cooks real, delicious food for her girls. She sets a simple, but elegant table and they sit and eat their meals together. I love this about her.
This has been a difficult week for our family and the whole country really. We are all very busy right now. Between our flooded basement and concerns about our family in Boston, I was really, really on edge last night. So I decided to try making the homemade ricotta recipe from Jennie's book with my kids.
This was an hour well spent -- and the results were delicious. Who knew it was so simple to make ricotta at home? The time spent making dinner and eating it with my kids was the highlight of a less-than-stellar week in the life of the Giles family.
Homemade with Love strikes a nice balance between basic recipes that beginning cooks can master and more innovative and complex options for more experienced cooks. I can't wait to try the lentil meatballs, carrot and fennel soup and homemade "Cheese It" crackers (yum).
The book is available on Amazon.com. I can't say enough good things about it.
