My review of Goodnight Moon: the Musical! (plus a special discount code for you!)

If you have children, you are no doubt familiar with the classic bedtime tale Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown (and if you aren't, I have no idea what is going on with bedtime at your house). This is the classic bedtime story -- you have to at least read it a couple of times!

Last week, my two year-old Colin and I had the chance to literally see this book come to life on stage, courtesy of the Chicago Children's Theatre.

Our little family has a rocky relationship with theatrical performances for children in general. Sometimes, my kids get scared and freak out and we have to exit the theater early. Other times, the performances and production quality are just so unbearably bad that I wish that I could exit the theater early. Other times, children's theatre can be a perfect mix of interactive and engaging fun that kids and adults can both appreciate. When that happens, live performances for kids can truly be a magical experience -- and that is what Goodnight Moon; the Musical! felt like to me.

Simply put: I loved this performance -- and so did my little guy. The set and staging were true to the story -- while also offering some added "bells and whistles" to keep things interesting.

Although this "not-at-all-tired" bunny is the star of the show, his supporting cast really sparkle. My son's eyes grew huge as he watched "Clarabell the Cow" emerge from her picture on the wall to attempt an ill-fated jump over the moon (the third time is the charm). The Three Little Bears are also show-stoppers (you've never seen bears with these kinds of moves).

After the show, we had the opportunity to go on stage and take a closer look at the set. My son thought this was super cool and has talked about it daily ever since.
