Have you heard about Atia's story? Over on the popular ChicagoNow blog Ay Mama!, Atia's mom Laura Lutarewych has been chronicling Atia's battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) for over two years. I highly recommend checking out some of Laura's posts so you can truly understand how amazing this family is and how they have persevered in the face of such hardship (it is truly an inspiration).
I am thrilled to report that Atia's story has a very happy ending. She has taken chemo every day since diagnosis in 2009 when she was 17 months old. She is now 3 years old and she recently took her final chemo pill. Needless to say, her family is absolutely ecstatic. To honor the end of Atia's treatment, Laura and her family decided to host a fundraiser to benefit Atia's Project Ladybug Fund at Comer's Children's Hospital. The money raised will help support children and their families who are undergoing cancer treatment.
The family-focused event is a Celebration of Life party -- complete with a Candy Land theme. Guests will have the opportunity to step inside a story book adventure with a life-size Candy Land game board, special appearance by Ms. Lindsay of Wiggleworms, a puppet show by Puppet Place and a “Kickin’ Cancer’s Butt” demonstration by Shim’s Tae Kwon Do.
This fantastic event is taking place next Sunday, July 17, 2011 from 12pm-3pm at the Chateau Ritz (9100 Milwaukee Avenue Niles). Tickets are available for $15 for adults and $10 for kids at http://celebrationoflife.charityhappenings.org/. Hurry up and reserve your tickets before sales close on Friday.
